Yea, I didn't have any issues with AMD drivers installing Ubuntu 13.04 on my Laptop with an AMD A6 APU. Ubuntu will pick the best up-to-date driver.

I still say the Steam Box will run Steam's own OS, and leave nothing for the user to do maintenance wise. It will just work like the Google ChromeBook. Everyone forgets and I don't mean you, but for most users they think anything Linux is free... Linux it self is free and free for anyone to make changes to and make profit for those changes (e.g. RedHat). Android to an extent is like this with having to buy new hardware to stay up to date and I'm not talking about rooting the phone, and obtaining your own update that's a different story.

I just hope Valve offers the Steam Box distro via ISO for users that want to make there own SteamBox. :toast:

i hope so to but i see potential problems for them if they did. more than likely the steambox distro will be optimized to run specific hardware, so even if they made the iso available it probably wouldn't run on most hardware. sort of like OSX. that won't stop people from buying the hardware themselves but then that means less profit for valve. i just don't think that is likely.

aww yea very true. Hardware will be the biggest problem. I hope they will offer a program for users to join for testing. I would be very interested in that if they do. We can only hope buddy. :toast:

you and me both. i would beta test that platform in a heartbeat. i am after all part of their target audience... the guy who only runs windows only because he enjoys pc gaming.

edit: i gather that most people on TPU only run windows because they PC game. most are smart enough to install ubuntu and have the latest drivers installed automagically.

From what I understand, developers can create an application under any licence or DRM scheme they want and have it run under Linux. Also, I think Torvolds doesn't care one way or the other if the apps are like this or not, just to keep the OS free of it.

What they can't do for example, is create a closed source version of Linux with DRM in it, which would violate the GPL.

I think this is right?

pfff... I've had an SteamBox since 2010 or so. The interesting bit is the SteamOS announcement.

I don't see Valve making HL3 SteamOS only; I can, however, see them offering the OS with HL3 free and preinstalled. That would be the perfect trojan horse.

The OS is Free and I don't think they will be giving HL3 for free either. Maybe some sort of promotion, where you get extra content or a discount (probably not) for playing HL3 on the steamOS.

any word on hardware specs? i know they will have different offerings from different manufacturers...

it seems to me that this will be a lot like buying a Dell that has Ubuntu preinstalled on it. Dell will support the OS integrating with the hardware and coordinate firmware updates,etc with the steamOS team.

Wrong its a linux based OS with Big Picture mode as the permanant UI. Free for downloading in 2014. Wont just be for the steam Box(es).

Yeah I keep forgetting with Linux you can't just make a widely compatible app, so I guess they're going to make SteamOS like Ubuntu, capable of booting off a disc. Still begs the question if it's really an "OS", or just an app running on the Linux OS?

I think it would have to be an OS otherwise it isn't simple enough for the laymen to use it. It needs to have built in wide support for hardware, a means to update that support, as well as updating the necessary software (dependencies). If it doesn't do these things, it is already a failure.

I suppose it'll boot into Steam Big Picture mode and I'd expect it to be the default (if not the only) GUI.

You can already do that in Windows though (with the "shell" method Windows doesn't even starts, netting you more performance).

I for one really want to shift to linux if all big AAA titles and cross platform games come to linux
