CPU whiz Jim Keller, who has been behind some of the biggest CPU core design projects with AMD and Apple, reportedly joined Samsung Electronics, after a brief second stint at AMD, in which he led the team designing the company's "Zen" CPU core micro-architecture. Samsung, makers of the Exynos family of ARM SoCs, which drive the company's own brand smartphones and tablets; could use Keller's talents in designing newer, bigger chips, or perhaps even smaller, low-power chips, as the company gears up for the wast and uncharted IoT industry.

Well that didn't take long. XD

With Samsung taking over for amd in 2016 this move isn't surprising. I could see the first Samsung cpu being Zen and the first Samsung gpu coming out late next year.

It looks like Samsung offered him more money and probably other benefits that AMD couldn't.

Um no. Keller designs. He doesn't oversee the production. Once Zen was designed, he's finished.

He does this with everyone. He is a mercenary. He had already left AMD again.

His experience with Apple probably was the reason behind offering him a job. Samsung wants to improve probably their future ARM cores IPC performance.

Their problem is shitty SDK and source, their kernel leaks memory and simply lags. Okay the bench scores are fine... but I take Qualcomm all the day better than Exynos.

Hopefully we will see a decent Android phone from Samsung (no lag, no need to charge the phone twice a day, no over heat)

Samsung probably Sweetened the pot with a promised Stock/share Deal (Futures option ) on Amd shares for when they eventually buy/ take over AMD (speculation)
then Jim gets to be boss over his old work crew again

you speak like those problems (they are all the same problem actually) were a result of an hardware issue, when it was, in fact, an android lollipop (5.0) software problem (high dummy load which caused both overheating of the soc and a faster battery drain).

still, amd is loosing valuable assets at a fast rate lately, and yet that marketing joke of a man still has a chair with his name in there... what a shame...

Now I'm actually wondering how it would be to own Samsung Radeon FuryX 2... :D

If I work for company that find AMD's assets valuable, I wouldn't buy it because my company will pay double one for buy the company and second pay the debt at due time or I can wait until the company get bankrupted and buy the useful assets and hire the useful engineers without needing to pay for over paid management and PR BSers.

Samsung just showed that they may be ahead of you there (Speculation ) :)

News: Man who has finished his current contract work joins up with another company.

Jesus Christ people, it's funny to watch the speculation. Did anyone expect Keller to retire? If not, he was going somewhere focused on ARM. Samsung has a boat load of cash, and made him an offer. This isn't an apocalyptic sign for AMD, just a contractor getting hired to do another job.

Maybe we can start speculating about what job Keller was hired for at Samsung, rather than try and link this back to AMD?

Edit:
Idiot move. I meant Samsung, but wrote AMD. Change has been made.

Surreal isn't it? Do you think this groundbreaking event will ever be duplicated in our lifetime? I seriously doubt it!

I'll take Zen, K12, and SkyBridge for $200, Alex.
Zen sounds like a done deal from an architectural standpoint
K12....who knows
SkyBridge.....cancelled. Relegated to the "Too Hard" basket.

Given AMD's staffing reductions I wouldn't find it surprising to find out Jim was also tasked with changing the toner cartridges in the printers and making sure a pot of coffee was always available in the break room.

Get used to it. Fantasy wish lists, endemic sniping, OT rants, no-word all-gif posting - it's the wave of the future. Look at the rise of sites ( WCCFWTFtech ) catering to pre-adolescent mouthbreathers. Cherish the sites that still offer a modicum of common sense.

Ooh and makes me think what Samsung are up to, i hope it's some thing i be interested in.

Hopefully Zen fulfills the hype. Keller with Samsung's money sounds interesting...

I think Samsung would be a formidable foe/competition to Intel, however, the x86 license nonsense is the biggest issue here.

They aren't kidding when they say this guy is a CPU wizz. I spent a lot of time yesterday watching interviews and what not of him, quite a lot of information coming out of his mouth on CPU design.

Qualcom's ADRENO is an anagram of RADEON
