Dell Unveils a 30-inch Ultra HD Monitor with an OLED Panel

The star attraction at Dell's CES booth was undoubtedly its stunning new 30-inch monitor, the Ultrasharp 30. Featuring an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panel, which offers the darkest blacks, and the brightest whites to get you contrast no LCD panel can ever come close to; this monitor also puts out Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution. Dell is asking US $5,000 for the Ultrasharp 30, which is reasonable, if you consider a similar spec'ed display from Sony going for $18,000. Dell plans to release the Ultrasharp 30 to the market by March 31, 2016.

its a lot of money to pay for blacker blacks which is what it comes down to.. also the $5000 Dell seems cheap compared to the $18000 Sony version.. he he

Nice but for ~$5000 USD I would rather go with a cheaper LG 31MU97Z-B 31" IPS 4K (two Thunderbolt ports) monitor for ~$799 or maybe the Seiki Pro SM40UNP 40" AV which was on sale at Newegg the past week for ~$508 (has since gone back up to ~$699).

OLED would be nice but not ~$5000 nice IMO.

As far as I'm aware OLED is highly anticipated for replacing current automotive headlight technology. I wouldn't be surprised if OLED suddenly became a highly reasonably priced technology once uptake swells in various markets, perhaps the next IPS.

It will be come mainstream in about that timeframe, say's my crystal ball (I've followed OLED for about 8 years now!). LG and Samsung are pushing hard for TV's and prices will only drop. Still one can buy an LG 55" 4K smart UHD TV for under ~$700 USD. I found one at Samsclub for ~$689 USD which was a little over half what I paid for my LG UB8500 55" 4K UHD Smart TV in 2014. So OLED is still comparatively expensive.

Yes it is still expensive. That will change and the OLED tech will also improve... time.

AFAIK as of current tech, laser is highly anticipated thing to replace automotive headlight tech. BMW and AUDI are showing off theirs at CES.

As for OLED screen, once I owned a samsung phone with OLED screen and I couldn't believe how nice the colors are. If I have the money, I'd buy this monitor but for smaller screen like 24". 27" and above are too big for my desk and if I want to have a bigger screen for watching movies and stuffs (I'm done with gaming heh), there's always my TV.

Maybe recent models have fixed it, but the Samsung I have seen, you could tell from afar they're OLED, that's how strong a green tint they had.
OLED can be great (gamut, response time, contrast), but it's so hard to actually make.
As for the size, I'm in the camp that believes 4k is wasted on a monitor smaller than 32"
