Windows users can't log in

The DNS server has collapsed. However, users cannot log into the domain?

I thought as long as they log in once, their credentials were saved locally into the computer?

Yes, the credentials are supposed to be cached on the local computer so the user can still log on if the Domain Controller can't be reached. However, it doesn't always work.

Cached credentials should be working unless there's another issue present, though there are times where cached credentials don't work it's usually a limited case in a company domain environment in my experience, have you attempted to disconnect from the network completely (disable WiFi, disconnected NIC) and attempted to login?

Were you using the domain server for DNS services as well?

I believe the DC was the DNS as well. No one could log in and secondary DNS was not replicating properly. Had to rebuild most of the stuff. A real PITA

It'll be affected by the group policy settings too It's possible that our OP's workplace may have prevented logons without the domain controller being available, for security reasons.

@slim142 Is the local admin account active on the PCs and with a known password? You could get in that way, however, this is often disabled or restricted for some reason by group policy for security reasons.

Now, if the local admin account is active, but the password isn't known, then there are always Windows password cracks discs out there...
