AMD's GPU Roadmap for 2016-18 Detailed

If GTX 980Ti was 559 I'd be having that and not a vanilla GTX 980 for 650€...

I am also the winter man. Although live on the 56th parallel... it corresponds to mid Alaska :D very multiple GPU friendly zone...

I'm looking at areas in the mountains around Denver. Like Evergreen, highest was 63f last summer. That's my kind of weather right there. No more of this 110f summer bullshit and high electricity bills due to Aircon.

Well, I am a Texas boy through and through but the electric bills especially in the summer with AC and such can get a bit high. I have ceiling fans in every room of my house :p and the door open to the study for my PC to help alleviate that. When I had an apartment I had to buy a window unit for the bedroom because the apartment didn't have central air and the huge window unit was only in the living room. Now that was a nightmare at night even with a Ceiling fan on high as I never was cool regardless of whether I was using the PC or not.

Hopefully we will see some improvements with this shrink on the power front but as long as we don't need ridiculous levels for the PSU to run the card then I am fine.

Well Polaris will be great for power, but I have a feeling all big chips will hover around the 300W range for a while. I'm ok with that, as long as I can contain the heat in the room.

Yea, I melt at like 75f when it's outside. I can't stand summers and almost never leave my house. If I don't wind up moving by next year I'll be gunning for telecommuting so avoid Texas drivers and the summer heat. July and August are bad because I like to keep the house at 68f and the AC basically stays on all the time. I have a Nest set to turn everything off when we leave at 5am and turn on at 5pm. Hoping that helps at least a smidge this summer, while leaving the ambient temp a little warmer in the rest of the house during the day on weekends and making the window unit (which is oversized for the room) keep it brisk in there.

Like he cares about Wattage when he can spend that kind of money on a GPU. Anyways those old 290s are still holding out pretty well against Maxwell. While same cannot be said for Kepler and its Maxwell next.

Because some one spends XX amount of money on a cannot care about power usage ?, sorry but what a load of codswallop.



 
It seems the lesson here is people use car analogies when their team of preference loses the performance per watt metric.

Nah, it's just a known fact red cars go faster, and going fast uses more fuel.

instead of turning everything off try to rize target temps at about the mid between expected outside temps and comfortable for you temps, for hours you are off house. ac will use less power to keep temps somewhere in the mid and then to cool down when you are about to come home then if it has to bring down temps from outside to comfi zone (and will do it for shorter time).

i am looking for something like 480x but will take it only if performance is with right price. i am fine to wait till it come at right price.

Nah, I've already done this. The AC still stays on the majority of the day even if I raise it to something ridiculous like 80f because outside temps are over 100. Turning it off means it's not being used at all during the day and the house only raises to about 85 or so because nothing is on and I have a big tree in the front of my house. That means for 12 hours out of the day the AC is off and when we get home the temps are already cooler meaning the AC doesn't have to work as hard to bring the temps back down anyways. So to sum it up, raise thermostat to 85ish and it will still kick on, or leave it off wasting no power during the day. I don't really need the house to be instantly cool when I walk in because I have the unit in my PC room. Walk in, drop my bag, grab a beer, turn on window unit and wait 5 minutes for it to be ice in my PC room. Takes 20 minutes or less to drop the temps in the house in the low 70s then it's off and on like usual.
 
AMD has been providing "superior" memory bandwidth and theoretical computational performance for years, while have beaten them with more efficient architectures, so why are they primarily focusing on even more memory bandwidth? Even Fury with it's enormous bandwidth didn't draw any real benefits from it, because no game is actually needing it. It will be years before games actually start benefiting from HBM(2).

AMD is struggling with an inefficient architecture, that's why even 2nd and 3rd generation GCN have huge theoretical performance but still never seems to be able to actually perform. So AMD should be focusing on this, rather than spending too much resources on fancy memory technologies they might not even need at this point, like the whole HBM(1) failure of Fiji.

Lots of AMD euphoria. The stock was up >50% today based on a quarterly report that sucked a bit less than expected.

Inferior architecture, inferior product support. They don't have the resources to invest anywhere near the R&D that Nvidia and Intel have. I'm curious how anyone sees them gaining back much of a market based on where they currently stand (deep in the red). They'll still face the same challenges going to smaller node that they've faced in prior years, where they've lost so much market share.

It's not looking good, and they are soon at the point of no return.
The graph also shows when they pretty much gave up on creating competitive products. With Fiji AMD spent all their GPU resources on a memory technology which did not provide any significant benefits for the product in the end, resources they could have spent on overhauling it's architecture instead. Fiji is immensely expensive, is hot, is underperforming compared to GM200 and have been struggling with yields. Even the upcoming "Vega" will not need HBM2, they could have sticked with cheaper GDDR5X (which would be more than satisfiable for gaming). If AMD ever is going to make profit they needs to be able to push out volumes of competitive GPUs in the $200-550 price range, if not they are pretty much dead.
 
I do love the car analogies, especially when they are so wrong: what use is a Ferrari or a Bugatti when you can't afford the maintenance cost?
Why would you buy any of them when you could consider a Tesla or an Audi? Both much more reasonable choices and with solid performance.

The logical and rational choices are clear.
