OneDrive - Bait and switch (but to what?)

MS in Europe is now rolling out its plan of scaling down free OneDrive from 15GB to 5GB. I'm sure all long-time teckies knew this was coming. The strategy has been used a thousand times before... offer a free service, bait the customer, build a critical mass, and later, switch, to paid.

Are YOU going to be baited and switch to the pay-to-use OneDrive model? Or will you leave, or will you switch to another solution altogether? Other cloud provider, or build your own eg. Internet connected NAS from Synology or Qnap or other. Last year I got myself a RS815+ for backups and to play with the synology cloud-syncing-apps. What will you do? What are your solutions to backup or always-available-access to your data?

Google Drive offers 17GB free, I see no discernible reason to bother with OneDrive's crippled storage capacity.

EDIT: For a painless transfer, I used microsoft's SyncToy to do a daily backup of DropBox/OneDrive items nightly at 4PM to a Google Drive folder. Once I had finished setting up my phone's automatic backup and had my work flow transferred, I just stopped the auto-backup script and uninstalled OneDrive/DropBox and carried on using Google Drive. Switching cloud storage service isn't remotely arduous.

Google Drive + Mega for me.

Just set up a RAID 5 array on the NAS (~3TB space) for local backups, and i'll throw kid pics online to google drive once they're sorted. At least then the important stuff is safe in case of a fire or whatever.

I kept getting 50GB offers in dropbox for a year, signing up with samsung phones. Never used the space lol.

MS in the US switch from 15Gb to 1Gb. But they give you a free year of Office 360 that comes with a 1Tb on one drive

It won't bother me. I use it only as a secondary copy of all my photos (i also automatically backup to my server, which then syncs to OneDrive).

I have not even cracked the 1GB barrier in almost 3 years, so this is no big deal to me.

I've just subbed to OneDrive last night for the 1TB capacity which I need (I've got almost 600GB data) as an offsite backup for all my data to go with my in-house backups.

I'm in the trial phase so it hasn't cost me anything at all yet, but it looks good from what I've seen. Also, I get Office with that sub, although that's not a critical feature as I've already got a full Office 2016 licence cheaply legally through work.

I opted in for keeping the storage so I still have my 30GB. It's still the best cloud storage IMO. I would probably just pay the 16SEK/month if I didn't get the 30GB, that's how good it is.

i noticed a long time ago that my Router has a USB port on it, I have been tinkering with the idea of plugging a HDD into it, and using it as my own "remote" storage, but true cloud storage IS a nice thing....I wonder if they could insert ad's on the site, and generate the needed revenue through those means? but i think M$ isnt one for "advertising profits" when subscription profits are a possibility.

I actually do that too, in addition to my server storage. A network drive hooked to the router becomes a great, quick transition storage place. Some more critical files are also copied there for triplicate backup.

It's basically an aggregation service for several of the most popular cloud storage services in one place (in my case GoogleDrive and Dropbox). Never really bothered with OneDrive.
Dunno if anyone ever tried JoliOS, but it was quite popular cloud OS before it got suppressed by ChromeOS and later discontinued.

Yea, they just stopped giving unlimited space to Office subscribers as well. I use google drive, dropbox and I do use onedrive, but nothing major in onedrive. I read something about Amazon has that's not bad and is fairly cheap. It's called "Amazon Glacier". It's $0.007 per gigabyte per month, but it's not like google drive or onedrive. You upload your files and hours later you can get access to it. So, for backups it's not a bad solution, but if you need access to the files regularly then it wouldn't be.

MS is a psychopathic mess of conflicting and ever changing businees islands, I've never seen such a complete cluster fuck. At work, our client file sharing portal is MS SharePoint (or whatever they're calling it today). I spent no less than 1 hour on the phone with a client trying to get them access to upload a video. Finally gave up and used my Google Drive, had the file in 10 minutes.

Google Drive. I used to use OneDrive, but they have THE most retarded linking system, you can't even link to entire folders anymore and the links people click open up a whole folder and just highlight a particular file which is so freaking clumsy. Google Drive on the other hand, it's clean, simple, easy to share files or folders via link, easy to manage access rights, it's just so much better. I just don't understand what the hell Microsoft is thinking when they make their service worse and worse. It's almost as if they want to lose their customers.
