I had 3 cards once in a system... and it was a complete waste. I ended up selling the 3rd and sticking with the 2.

I think people read over this bit:

DX12 [...] allows developers to directly implement and control multi-GPU support within their games. If a developer chooses to use these technologies then their game will not need SLI profiles. Some developers may also decide to support more than 2 GPUs in their games. We continue to work with all developers creating games [...] that take advantage of 2 or more GPUs to make sure they’ll work great on GeForce 10-series GPUs.

While there will be older games (pre-DX12) with support for only 2x SLI with 10-series GPUs, wouldn't this imply better support - from the game developer - for multi-GPU setups in the future?

With DX12 the game dev can support 3 or 4 cards if they want to put the time and effort in to the game engine to support it but most likely they won't either. DX12 takes the SLI/CF outta hands of Nvidia/AMD and puts it pretty much solely in hands of game dev though i bet they will still beable to do SLI/CF in drivers but would be better for game to do it.

the dev work is on game makers now, thing is how many game dev's will spend the time and money to support 3/4 cards? Given the size of the market for that many cards which its just cheaper and easier to buy more powerful cards since 4 cards in 1 machine is pretty bulky and cumbersome.

That said, it still would not surprise me if workarounds happen. And no, that wouldn't be piracy, though it may be a EULA violation.

Location and not on contract billing. I have a roommate, gf, and 2 kids. Multiple TVs, a dual processor server on 24/7, my machine, gf's machine, multiple consoles, roommates machine, and AC set to 68f year round. What helps the most is nobody is home most of the day. The most action happens on the weekends since we both work 12 hours a day.

2-Way SLi always had the best scaling so I agree with NVidia so now will even get better scaling in 2-way sli then before but we should also take advantage of the second GPU in CUDA apps not just limited to quadro GPUs.

Until now the Titans always sold for more than half their value. It's how I've stayed on the top card each generation. The 1080 absolutely destroys that but at least it's a 2 year gap between card kings though.

Its same on AMD side, but its funny the people making the most fuss and complaints over this are ones that won't ever use 3/4 way. Most of them doubt would use 2 way. Just another thing for people to complain about.

Why, because they dropped a niche system? While I am one who has used 3+ GPU's on both sides for years I don't see any problem doing this. The only issue I take is a slight change on what they said before and that's it. As long as Dual GPU gets better and they focus on that and making it great (along with DX 12) there is no reason to complain except for that 1% of people who do it.

Wow, I'm disappointed. Well maybe things will work out for the best but I have always really enjoyed my CF set ups and have run them from the very start of it all and stayed with multi card set ups ever since. Maybe Red won't change but time will indeed tell. I normally lean towards 2x dual gpu's but hey that's just me. I hope the Green guys have a decent alternative in the end though.

3 and 4 way is still an option with DX12, since that is the game that handles dividing up the work load. As for DX11 games, they won't support over 2 way to keep user experience high. In a sense its kinda what Apple does, lock user from certain things to make things work best as possible, not always right to some people.

There is a way to enable 3 way sli for all games by changing one profile entry. It is explained on youtube how to.
