This is kind of bizarre. Softbank seems to be an investment conglomerate and ARM isn't exactly weak. At the same time, I don't think ARM is really growing either. If it is, it is because of burgeoning markets like China and India. Not sure why Softbank would aquire ARM and especially why it would do so now. I'm thinking this might create a hole for someone else to barge in (especially Intel).

SmartTVs are way too limited (inability to install more apps and the apps themselves being limited in the first place) and smart appliances only millionaires would pay for (exception being thermostat). IoT is too gimmicky and generally unnecessary. What it tries to do, it often does poorly. It's not necessarily ARM's fault, it's the manufacturers that produce the products. Softbank isn't going to be able to change that.
