the card has a bios switch

press it and you will be good to go its the S button on the side JESUS H Christ :banghead:
come on at least bother to check that the card is dual bios before making him jump though hoops
once the card is booted and you have the correct bios with the machine ON press the switch again and re-flash the correct rom with atiflash -unlockrom 0 and atiflash -f -p 0 filename.rom

@JR1
and I am sorry but please just do it your self because if he manages to brick the backup bios then you really will be done

here is the correct bios
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/166240/sapphire-r9290x-8192-141023

64k is the non uefi bios (backup)
128K is the uefi bios

download that file to your usb key containing dos/atiflash
in this order
machine off press the S button
assuming the backup legacy bios is intact boot from the usb key

with the machine on press the button again

atiflash -unlockrom (failure todo this is why you are getting a error)

atiflash -f -p 0 Sapphire.R9290X.8192.141023.rom
reboot done

there is never ever EVER a reason to update the bios on a previously stable working machine

there is never ever EVER a reason to update the bios on a previously stable working machine

Except as the OP Stated
My son has learning difficulties and is disabled

His whole life revolves around his computer and gaming with people in the USA from the UK

Yesterday (and he does know a fair bit about computers) he decided to update the graphic card and the BIOS, NO he didn't back it up.

Its Not the OP's FAULT he is just trying to Help his Disadvantaged Son

Hey, this is the son!, I've only now made an account , I'm also going to update.

I've had no further progress with the GPU, bios!

my dad is JR, i'd like to say thank you to the man that I spoken to over the phone although we didn't get far sadly, i've still had no progress.

I'm reading over all comments made and like to say thank you people to ones that have commented and are trying best to help me my dad has kept me upto date with what's going on.

After updating the bios (by mistake), the card does have dual bios, but for some reason, neither works. ( i had both cards plugged in at the time ) weird how only 1 card bios died, the other one is fine! so i'm stuck with the other.

My only option is to (if AMD never reply) see if can find someone smart enough to bios flash the GPU! from windows BIOS directly via USB drive, or something according to information found that's an option.

Except as the OP Stated

Thank you sir for defending me i much appreciate that i'm not good to well at understanding stuff unless my dad explains stuff to me in a certain way i understand or it's written out in a way someone else would understand! same with any help someone may provide.

that's a shame, the young one buggered up a flash. It happens to even the best of us.

what version of ATI flash are you running? I found the newer ones are crap and don't work.. I mean on an R9 card..

Here's the link, I just went through my notes and I know this flash program will work.

download the 3.86 version and slap it on your usb stick.

https://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1968/atiflash-3-86

Will give that a try this weekend, thank you.

if the legacy bios isn't booting turn secureboot and hardware fastboot off in the mainboard bios

else you will need to boot from integrated graphics and flash the rom I linked

1 other thing to try- Move the card to a different PCIE slot or Try it on another Machine

Use Sapphire's Directions before anything else

If you feel uncomfortable doing this take it to a shop.

http://www.sapphiretech.com/productdetial.asp?pid=718897BF-E6D5-4C79-AA00-C1DC766ADF80&lang=eng

My card's SKU is 11227-04 it has the 1030MHz GPU Core Clock and 1400MHz Ram Clock. Yours is 11227-05 with the 1000MHz Core Clock and 1400MHz Ram Clock

I am Uploading my Cards Bios as a ROM file from GPU-Z.

This is compressed via ZIP file with my GPU Bios Switch pressed in for UEFI (Lights blue) I am unsure if this really matters or not for the bios dump.

These links may help but as I said before If you are uncomfortable doing such a "Surgery" take it to a shop.

This will be a last resort if stuff get's to tricky!! I won't do something that's to complicated! if it doesn't work first time, then either find someone with top notch experience, or try a shop if there's one that is nearby, that has ability for this

This is the secondary file (unsure how to upload multiple files at once here if it allows it at all...

this was dumped from my GPU via GPU-Z with the Switch Off (not Lit Blue) so its in CSM/LEGACY mode (unsure if the switch position matters or not, if they are the same file...)

I won't use yours sorry , why (states 290 and 4gb) mines 290x 8gb.

I'm trying here myself bro I feel very bad for this person that this happened, it certainly wasn't a cheap card when it was launched (very well built unit)

I've had both my 290x's for a long time, they were upgrades from "7970 Asus Maximus Platinum".

Lovely cards, even now they are top notch, especially the 8GB of Vram

here is the correct bios
https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/166240/sapphire-r9290x-8192-141023

Doesn't it have to be renamed to bios.rom?

you can it doesn't really matter
if its not booting from the legacy bios its probly because secureboot/hardware fastboot is on in the mother boards bios
just omit fiddling with the button of if you are doing this from the on-board graphics
the button selects which chip to bootfrom/flash

Okay here's what me and my dad were able to do and got to as far as this.

1) Have the Bricked bios gpu plugged in.
2) Have windows boot from the CPU
3) Have stuff needed to redo bios put onto a bootable USB DEVICE
4)

That's as far as we've gotten.

Luckily my secondary GPU is fine working, i've made a copy of the bios from that! and i'm trying to use that bios to put on the bricked GPU. specially as they are both the same cards, and second one has default original bios. "LUCKILY"

But I can't get the bios or program to read the DARN GPU!!!!!

you can it doesn't really matter

Me and my dad will go over this tomorrow or after the weekend/during weekend, and see what we can do about that, may even be able to do it tomorrow, little bit late especially as it's 22:11pm

The CPU doesn't have onboard graphics, maybe a reason why? it's an i7 5960x.

Atleast this doesn't mention it does https://ark.intel.com/products/8293...ssor-Extreme-Edition-20M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz

My 290 4gb is pretty good, fallout 4 1920x1200 not below 50 odd fps

igpu or not the process is the same you may need to change the command to make sure you are pointing to the right adapter use atiflash -ai to list all adapters

if you change the button it needs to be done with the machine OFF and with no other video cards in the system unless you managed to trash the legacy bios as well

As i say, it doesn't matter what graphics card you have or how high end it is! if it works it works, if it gives you steady FPS it's a good card, I game at 2560x1440 and my 290x's in crossfire are amazing, even a single card!! Great upgrade from my old 7970 MP card.

Okay I'll keep this noted thank you.

What if doing this doesn't work??

I know gpu isn't 100% dead. as it worked perfectly fine before update messed up, but if the computer can't read it should i be more worried? it knows it's there, because if i don't switch to cpu before plugging it in, my computer wont enter bios or anything.. but when i switch to cpu in bios before plugging card in, even after card is plugged in after it will boot.

post the output of atiflash -i or atiflash -ai and go from there

worst case scenario you may need todo whats called a pin short to get the bios chip to unlock for flashing its not easy but its do-able

requires either a SOiC8 testclip or a steady hand with a soldering iron and magnifying glasses
you short pin 1 to pin 8 on the bios chip which forces write-enable and it needs to be done with the machine on and running I use a test clip and jumper wires for it

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012CF5J74/?tag=tec06d-20

barring that you would need a blackcat usb bios programmer and manually program the bios

this is why we stress do not mess with the bios unless you A: have good reason too B: know what the fawks you are doing

the test clip makes it easier just locate the bios chip orient the test clip the correct way and put a jumper wire on the appropriate leads flash with atiflash and disconnect the clip

Welcome to TPU!

Can not "someone" (@CAPSLOCKSTUCK ) go there, use a GPU of his own which is NOT similar to the GPU in his case and flash the damn thing with the bios of the other identical card? Seems the easiest way to overwrite the wrong bios of GPU #1.
This seems totally solvable to me.

Download this flash tool and slap it to your bootable drive, preferably usb stick.

Seriously try this flash tool I linked you to.

https://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1968/atiflash-3-86

your bios that you have, rename it to Hawaii.rom

put your good card in the top pci-e slot that's normally adapter 0 and plug your monitor into it.

the bottom slot where your going to install the bad card will be adapter 1

But once in dos type.. Atiflash -i and a menu should show you the correct number the bad card is in. If its showing 1 then that's good.

Now the command to try if the lower cards adapter is showing 1

atiflash -f -p 1 Hawaii.rom or .bin then hit enter

if all goes well then re-boot and it'll be back up and running.

I had a problem flashing using the .rom command but when I changed it to .bin it worked even though it was marked .rom
