[GTX1080] No Anti Aliasing

Hey, I have a very insane problem that I can NOT figure out for the life of me. I suddenly began to have an issue where my anti-aliasing was literally non-existent. As if ONLY AA suddenly stopped working and I had jaggies in every one of my games. When I would move my mouse objects in the distant would shimmer and jaggies are everywhere. I know this isn't normal or how it's supposed to look because I very distinctly remember the day it began happening. I have even gone as far as purchasing a completely new PC and STILL have the exact issue! It's mind boggling. If anyone has any insight into this issue or how to fix it I would greatly appreciate any help.

PC specs? Drivers tested? Bad resolution maybe?

I've had this issue on 2 completely different PC's now. I bought an entirely new pre-built PC and still have the issue.

I'm using the same resolution as I was before the problem even started so it's not that.

Ever tried a different cable / display? There's a possibility that the EDID info / rendered Frames aren't transmitted properly, and especially the shimmering sounds like a display issue to me. We had that a lot, especially on notebooks where the internal connectors are somewhat fragile.

I've tried using a different DVI cables and even an HDMI cable with a different monitor and the jaggies / aliasing are still all there. It's really irritating because objects with fine lines in the distance shimmer and move and its distracting. I used to not have this problem and it just suddenly started happening and not even buying a completely new PC has fixed it. Can it be power? electricity? grounding? It sounds far fetched that any of those can cause such a specific problem as the anti aliasing not working at all but i have no clue what to think at this point

its either the game you're testing changed something (patch?), a driver update changed things (reset to defaults) or user error (you changed a setting in the NVCP thats over-riding the other settings - dont forget global and per game profiles are relevant)

Since the problem started to occur, it has affected every game I play so it wasn't the game that changed. I tried rolling back drivers when it initially happened and that didn't fix it either.

I found a thread here of someone having the same issue as me. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2620399/flickering-bad-anti-aliasing-entire-household.html

It explains the monster problem I'm having and every thread I've seen on the internet has no solution to it. It is literally as if something in my house is disabling all of my anti aliasing in every device. What's also weird is that when I watch youtube videos or twitch streams, all of the aliasing and jaggies are present there too... I know there is something causing this but I can't pin-point what. Friends that have come to my house can see the visible shimmer, and aliasing and know its not right, especially when I can see it looks how it should on their pc's in their homes and i clearly remember the day my games suddenly looked like shit with shimmering, jaggies, and just no anti aliasing working no matter how much it is forced through nvidia inspector or control panel.
Some degree of in-game AA seems to work but practically everything in the distance has shimmering and jaggies going on, something I clearly remember not looking so bad before the problem started.

you sure its not just you noticing it, and now you cant unsee it? That kind of thing does happen, especially with people who go to 2K/4K and go back to 1080p (i cant play SCII on my laptop anymore after going 4K, i struggle to even make sense of the super aliased 768p image) as well as people going from say 144hz back to 60hz

edit: someone commented in that thread you linked "i got my eyes checked and i'm short sighted now" - seriously, you could just be aware of it now and pointing it out to other people makes them notice it too.

I understand what your saying, but I very clearly remember the DAY it started to happen and I've been on 1080p the entire time. The same game I had been playing for months that looked great, suddenly looked terrible because of all the jaggies and shimmering when moving my mouse and looking around in-game. Now, even after buying a completely new pc, I'm still experiencing the same issue... Jaggies and shimmering in the distance of all my games and videos i watch.

If that were the case, They would appear that way on my friends PC games too, but they dont.. They look how they should and how mine once looked....

that is a good point. all i can suggest here is taking your setup to a friends house and theirs to yours, and testing side by side - seperately as they are, and then do part swaps (each others screens, for a start)

Come to think of it... there's a setting called mipmap LOD bias that has the shimmering effect you describe. Here's an excerpt of a tweaking guide for STALKER that explains it (note my avatar :p):

"r1_tf_mipbias [-0.500 - 0.500] - Controls the mipmap LOD bias, which in effect determines how clear textures are in the distance. Greater negative values make distant textures far crisper and clearer, but at the cost of reduced FPS and also an increased shimmering effect. Greater positive values make things blurrier and reduce detail, but may improve FPS. Given the Anisotropic Filtering slider in the in-game settings is non-functional, this setting is the main way to control texture filtering and hence the clarity of distant textures in STALKER."

To be precise: Are objects up close fine and it's only objects in the distance that exhibit this behavior? Which games exactly are affected? Oh, and could you post an actual photo or video of what you're experiencing?

EDIT: "Cannot unsee" is a good point actually. Games often have terrible in-game antialiasing that has almost no effect and can trick you into thinking that it is not AAed at all.

could it be anisotropic filtering causing the shimmering?

suddenly changed to LED lighting in the home causing reflections that werent there previously?

It is literally as if something in my house is disabling all of my anti aliasing in every device.

Literally impossible unless somebody recently installed a giant Van Der Graaf generator outside your house without realising. I've seen that blur pixels on older monitors at close proximity.

It's also possible that you have developed a medical issue with your eyes.

I think there's a certain confirmation bias in your case, where you've seen an issue on your PC and now you're applying it to everything you see because you're aware of it as a problem. It's worth rolling back the Windows 10 Creator's update because that breaks more than it fixes, and roll back a couple of drivers too.

Did you happen to use nvidia DSR before and forgot to apply that on your new system?

Does your monitor have a gameing mode that you might have turned on by mistake? only asking because my monitor has such an option and if i turn it on every game looks like shit.

With gaming mode on everything looks over sharp and bright, edges of trees just didn't look right and things seemed to shimmer just like you mention and it also looks like AA is not working due to the over sharpness.

I also had a samsung tv that displayed the same issues as above and to fix it i set the input name/mode to PC/DVI, this would also disable gaming mode on the old TV.

So, I was unable to find a reason for this. For those who have the same problem I can only suggest to go through the steps I took to fix it, and to have a close look whether AA is, in fact, working, but almost unnoriceable due to bad ingame AA
