We expect to know a little more about AMD's Ryzen 3 processors soon, which are expected to compete against Intel's Core i3 processors while offering a full-blown, true quad-core design against Intel's dual-core + HyperThreading solutions. However, it would seem that ASUS itself has given up a little of the game away, through a processor compatibility list for its upcoming Crosshair VI Hero WIFI AC motherboard.

The processor specifically detailed is AMD's Ryzen 3 1200 CPU. We already know this to be a quad-core part (and ASUS notes it as a 4C processor, so, four cores), but ASUS' misstep tells us this one will carry a base clock speed of 3.1GHz, with 8 MB of L3 cache and a 65 W TDP.

I'm pretty sad they're releasing dual cores. I was hoping quad core would be the bottom. Dual cores should only be on ultra low power chips/packages now.

Where did you read that? It is my understanding that Ryzen 3 lowest CPU-s are 2+2 cores (2 CCX's) with no SMT.

i think dualcores will be reserved for ultra low end APU-s coming later this year (based on Zen).

The sharks are out.

@FordGT90Concept nothing against you or anything but almost every other thread you seem to be somewhat negative towards AMD...Is there a reason?
I would think you would want them to do well, so we all can benefit. NO?

It won't matter much. Pricing will. At $150-180 this is going to be a good buy. Above that, not so much.

I think the R5 1400 is around that pricing so this may end up being around the $100-130 price mark.

I'm looking forward for the low end model APU's. Even if they come in dual core hyperthreaded configuration, if they'll run at decent clock speed it's gonna be pretty cool. Ryzen cores and probably Polaris GPU core. Should be nice as replacement for my aging AMD E-450. Which is still kicking now that I figured out why Youtube was running like crap on it (dumb browser GPU blacklisting, ignored it and now Youtube plays smoothly again). But all in all, with dual 1.6 GHz Bobcat cores, it kinda feels old. Besides, if I don't have dsktop with Ryzen, at least I'll have a laptop :)

Where did you get that? R3 1400 is the bottom most Ryzen and it has 4 true cores. It's the Core i3 that is still hyperthreaded dual core...

Edit: Oops, @RejZoR was quicker than me.

Maybe he meant the APU SKU above the R3 1200 description, here :

But I don't think these will end up in laptops. And even if they will in mobile editions, I don't think laptops with them will be sub 350€ models which is what I'm targeting. But if they will, bring it on :D It would shake up the market immensely, because right now it's flooded with garbage Celeron N3050/3060 budget laptops. If you're very lucky you get a Core i3 for ~380€...

I'm surprised that these 3.1 quad cores have the same TDP as the 8 core 3.0 GHz 1700. a 35 watt desktop chip would be great for low power HTPC/servers.

2 core chips seem like a thing of the past for AMD but this threading thing they have going on, its like a kid with a new toy. ;)

I think they leave the same TDP in place to allow more overclocking headroom. Bu then again, I don't think AMD measures TDP the same as intel, so my interpretation could be way off track.

All current Ryzen CPUs cores are configured to use ~40W on 4 thread load. Add components that are not cores and you are above 45W. The best bins should come sometime later or maybe even with next iteration of Zen, but they might cost more.

TDP does not equal power draw.

Oh, I didn't see all the older APUs on the list. This makes me happy! :D Now Intel needs to follow suit.

TDP does not equal power draw.
Yeah, it's mostly targeted at OEMs designing cooling solutions and power supplies so they know how much heat to dissipate and how much power to provide.
