970 in SLI with downclocked FX 8120!

Hello,
So bought 2 Asus GTX 970 to run in SLI(upgraded from GTX 780)
The problem is my PSU is Xpro 550W(it handled my power hungry 780 and fx 8120 perfectly)
So if i disable 2/4cores of CPU and then run the GPUs in SLI will it work?

AMD FX 8120
MSI 970A G46
8GB Hyperx fury RAM
4TB WD HDD
Mostly i game at 1680*1050 and at medium to custom settings!!

Your system is already crippled by that PSU, upgrade the psu to a Seasonic, Enermax, Antec, or I guess FSP or Evga...

I hit +530 W from the wall with a stock 4970 and slightly OC'ed 970s so I would not recommend anything less than a good 650 W.

Well one more thing that if the 650W PSU i get is not 80+ gold/bronze( i know nothing abt these lol) will it work with my system?

It will work, although I recommend a Gold rated or at least Bronze rated well known good PSU.

Yeah, get a decent PSU. Also, that 8120 is bottlenecking your performance, especially with that downclock. Consider upgrading to a 7700K if your budget will allow it. Won't be cheap.

I personally would of gone for an 1070 or 1080 instead.

I ran 970s in sli since their release then sidegraded to the 1070 and i was much happier. Less power consumption, less heat and less headaches with games.

Then sell them on for a profit. And grab a 1070, 1080 or 980ti. Trust me. Unless you're a bencher, miner/folder or need to run 4k or 144/165hz monitors Dual GPU setups just aint all that anymore and i say this from at least 10 years of experience

They are also very badly aging cards (performance plummets in newer games) and probably the worst one of the last five years to SLI with.

Your low price will be offset by a high power bill, stutter, and the cost of a new PSU because you really can't push this ATM.

So bottom line it was the worst set of cards you could buy and probably the reason they were cheap in the first place . Sell them now that people are mining like crazy, you'll get a decent price, and invest that into a 1070 or better. Another option is to cut your losses entirely and stick to ONE 970 and sell the other. 970 + 8120 is not a huge bottleneck. But two of them probably adds up to most inefficient gaming rig of the year.

After that start saving for a decent platform + CPU.

trust me for your monitor,easy buy gtx 1060 3gb and be happy!!!
lower power consumption,no sli issues, around the same performance.... what else ca nyou ask for,bonus newer card so longer driver suport..

2 970s easily beat a 1060 man...one might...

Though i agree about ditching sli for 1080p gaming.. get a 1070 or better.

I ran 970 SLI for over 6 months and i agree with most things said here

1. Get a better PSU, 80+ bronze at least, 600W or above (my 970's w. OC'd 3770k hit around 550W load)
2. If possible, sell the GPU's for a better single one. It might work well in benchmarks, but oh my god that 3.5GB ram limit is crippling in new titles - whats the use of having the GPU power of a 1070, if you can only run medium textures? (low at 4k) before hitting that limit?
3. Replace the CPU. Single threaded performance is total garbage, and you've made it even worse by Underclocking. I've helped people upgrade from FX8320's over to Intel i5 2500's (dirt cheap here seocond hand) and seen massive gains - they really are just terrible for gaming. Lower wattage too, so it might help your PSU issues to go down that road.

Any brand and model above Tier 3 in the PSU Tier List(link in my sig). if you insist on SLi, aim for 650 and up wattage.

overclocking was a typo - i meant under/downclocking.

And yes i ran SLI 970's with a 2K and 4K screen, and i had to run way lower settings than benchmarks indicate - i was seeing micro stutter and ~3-3.5GB VRAM usage and at the same settings in the same games with the 1080 i was seeing 6-7GB - either the games or the drivers try and free up the VRAM and it hurts the performance, like having a 3.5GB 1070
