Intel, at its Research@Intel Day in Santa Clara, CA, announced that it is working on an anti-cheat system for games. The idea is that Intel and the PC gaming industry would build technology into gaming rigs that could detect when common cheats - such as "aimbots" that handle targeting while the player just holds down the trigger - are used in an online gaming session, said Travis Schluessler, a researcher at Intel.

PCs equipped with this technology would notify a server that someone in the game is using a cheat, and then the game administrator could set a policy of kicking the cheat offline. Intel is still working out the details; don't expect to find this in a high-end gaming PC anytime soon.

Interesting but sounds like a plan without head and butt.

They think they can control what my CPU does.

Hope they can get it to work.

I think they should just leave it alone. Something like this has resource hog written all over it. What are they going to do about errors if its hardware based?

Typical Intel... saying they are the best for gaming, then taking the fun away :(... it's fun watching opponents stand there in disbelief at yor targeting skills.

Nothing fun about cheating, unless it's the only way you can spring an erection. Completely ruins the fun of multiplayer games.

Methinks any multi-core processor will be able to handle this no problem.

Wow.. this is bad news :(

I don't think it's gonna be very effective though, plus hacks are made to avoid hack detectors such as VAC, PunkBuster etc.. it will be the same with this.

"Intel-Proof"

the way they are probably going to do it is by using intel virtualization technology. hypervisor monitors the whole OS for cheats

I am going to have to agree with you on this one

Though I don't think it can't ultimately work, remember -- they make your CPU. ;)

i really hope this works...

And so treacherous computing begins. Looks like Intel's promise was worth nothing, surprise, surprise.

My next processor will be a SPARC. Goodbye, IA-32.

So by the time games use every bit of your processor you think adding a dynamic cheat detector will still run fine? Hell a quad core at 3ghz cant run supcom the greatest...what makes you think its going to get easier?

because the 4 cores are not being used?

Are you talking about Supcom? In the review [H] did it used all 4 although was limited by the bus speed. Either way games make use of new hardware as it becomes available. I am personally not a fan of making matters worse.

You all offer interesting arguements to say the least. Having never experienced online gaming with a PC (I have a little with the Xbox 360) I cant really say if I support or do not support this.

Wrong thread....

This isn't something only in the realm of online gaming. The difference between online ads and offline, is that the online ones are dynamic. If you have played Need for Speed Underground, or Gran Turismo's you have seen in game ads, whether you noticed them or not. They have been around for quite some time actually, in the static-offline version. Name the games you play on 360 and I can prolly tell you if they have in game ads or not.

I think you got your threads mixed up

Gamers will find a way around it, and it will be buggy it its even used by a game company.

D44ve - >.< Damn Tabs on Firefox...Whoops

Hmm, if they start doing this to stop cheaters... what if they do it to detect dodgy software?! o.O

Pretty soon there'll be an Intel employee in every household.

With the occasional visit from the RIAA/MPAA.

Cheat your heart out is SP, don't come ruin others fun in MP. Anyway, don't see this working, cheaters will just buy AMD. Oh and paying cheaters are bottom of the scum, how n00b you have to be not to win the right way, but to pay some cheating site to give you no fog, colored opponents, see through walls and autoaims.

Usually cheaters are just so sucky that it's so easy to spot the. Once I was behind a wall far away from walker and he started shooting me. Not like he could have seen me or had a real change killing me there only to give a way that he's cheating.

Doesn't really matter anymore, it's not a in game any longer and most of the cheaters are cheating away in some other games, got bored with instakills or play in no voting server so that they can't be kicked out.
