there is no i7 6400t (at least not in the released official products), there is i5 6400t.
intel's ark has nice compare function that highlights differenced between intel processors: http://ark.intel.com/compare/88195,88187
short version - 4 cores, 4 threads vs 4 cores 8 threads and 2.2ghz (2.8ghz turbo) vs 4.0ghz (4.2ghz turbo) all in favor of 6700k.

doesn't sound like a good upgrade but that depends on price.
going by prices new - ryzens are much cheaper for the same price.

in addition to this, intel's new 8xxx series of processors should be accounced/released on monday. depending on prices these might become competitive to ryzens.

As @londiste said, not really much of an upgrade. 4cores/4 threads. 2.2GHz with turbo to 2.8GHz. Get the 6700k if it is your alternative pick.

The T in 6400T means it is a low power processor, which means a low clock speed to save on power consumption. Games don't like low clock speeds, so no it wouldn't be that great at gaming. Especially not at only 2.8GHz max turbo.

Honestly, I think it would be about the same as your FX-81520 in games, maybe even a little worse.

If you looking for an in-expensive processor to replace the FX-8120, you can look at the i5 6500 as a decent starter processor, or even the AMD Ryzen 5 1400. I'd lean towards the Ryzen 5 1400 because it can be overclocked.

Or you can wait a few months until the next generation of Intel processors drop. The i3's are rumored to be 4-core parts, and the overclockable i3 8350K is expected to be sub-$200 priced. That should be a good value for the money. Basically it should be a 7600k for under $200.

With Intel's new processors a month of so away from release, right now is a bad time to upgrade CPUs, IMO.

There exists 4c/8t 65W Skylake i7 but it's low clock and you can only overclock it with bclk
At stock it's still faster than stock piledriver/ excavator

I believe the only way to overclock these is to adjust the BCLK, and you have to be pretty lucky to get it high enough to hit 3.7-3.8GHz. Yes, at that clock it would be an FX, but that clock speed isn't something easy to achieve.+

IMO, it just isn't worth it. It's better to just get a regular processor, the cost savings really isn't that much by going with a ES processor.

The E3 1240 V2 isn't even the same socket, it is an older generation using older motherboards. Don't even consider it.

If your budget is that tight, don't do anything. Keep the 8120, maybe push its clock speeds up a notch or two, and just save until you have some more money.

Is the FX8350 an option for you?

Upgrading from an 8120 to an 8350 would be a good option since you would only need to change the cpu. I know most would claim that any FX is garbage but, in your case, going from an 8120 to an 8350 would bring you a good experience.

I upgraded from an 8150 to an 8350 in my main rig long ago and didn't regret that decision at all.

I would consider a meaningful upgrade only something from the current Intel/AMD lineup that has at least 8 threads.

Yeah but hat's a low clocked engineering sample , I have no idea how much or if you can even overclock it.

Basically it's not a great idea , if you want to upgrade and get on a new platform you can probably do better. Tell us your budget.

Yikes.

The only way id drop an 8350 in there is if you NEED the cores. Otherwise, there isnt much point. You can overclock the 8120 to those speeds+ (you can overclock the 8350 too though).

As far as bclk overclocking goes, get a board with a bclk generator on it and you can get it to the cpus/your coolings limit. 4ghz should be easy. On hwbot, it averages 4.2ghz on air, 4.4ghz on water. ;)

The Skylake platform is way newer than the fx. So in that case it's an upgrade. The CPU is not an equivalent to the i7 6700k at all and is most likely a ES chip. So I would take it over the fx but it's not the same at all as the 6700k

Here's the thing , if you want something modern along the lines of Skylake you would need a new motherboard and DDR4 RAM which isn't cheap these days.

For 230$ I don't think it's gonna cut it or it wont be much better than what you already have.

I think your best bet would be to search for something like a i7 2600K + motherboard combo and use the RAM from your current build. Overclock it if you can and that should be a fairly big upgrade from that 8120.
