What is 5 Years Hard Drive Warranty actually means?, Is it Secure?

Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy 10TB Segate IronWolf Drive, I need to know, what this 3 or 5 years warranty exactly means...

-Suppose I have my data 9TB data kept on on 10TB drive and it fails, then how can I get back my data?
-Does Segate take my failed 10TB drive which has 9TB data and gives me Brand new 10TB of new empty hard drive?
-Suppose If am giving my failed drive with data to their service center to recover data then after recovery my data will be visible to recovery staff as well right? or do they give me any license software to recover by own?

Need to clear these doubts..

Warranty means they will replace the drive when it breaks in that 5 year limit.


I advise you not to put all your data on 1 drive. Use multiple drives.
You have to pay more for data recovery in case it fails.



I dont trust seagate with any of my data personally.

It means a brand new empty hard drive. you must back up data always. If it is important, get extra hard drives to back up to. And hard drives are mechanical, they will always fail over time.
So will ssds.. it's just a fact of life. But always back up data more than once if it's important.

You either restore from a backup, or if you don't have a backup, you send it off to a data recover service and pay a huge sum of money for them to recover you data for you.

Most of the time, they will return an empty refurbished drive, not a new one.

If the data could just be recovered with a piece of software, the drive wouldn't need to be replaced. So, yes, the people at the data recover service will see all your data.

I dont trust seagate with any of my data personally.

The manufacturer of the drive doesn't really matter, the model is far more important. For example, I'd trust literally any Seagate drive way more than a WD Blue.

I don't know , I had Seagate drivers fail and I only got sent new drives , one time I even got a new revision.
Pretty much WD sends a refurb. That being said, I have had very good luck with refurbed drives (any refurb product, actually). I believe quality control is higher than with new, since most new products dont get checked, only a certain percentage.

Data is not covered for Warranty ( your Data your Back up Problem).
the ONLY Data Probably covered BY WARRANTY would Be Program Install's ect for Supplied Hardware on R/O media
and then they would either Replace the R/O Media or tell you to re Download

Sadly, no it doesn't. I have never (as in NEVER EVER) received a "brand new" drive with the sole exceptions being when I have received a new drive that was DOA. In those cases alone, I returned the drive to the vender (Amazon, NewEgg, etc.) and got a "brand new" drive back.

But whenever a drive has failed after the "30 day" vendor's return policy expired and we had to go through the manufacturer's warranty support service, we always got back a "refurbished" drive. If you check, for example, Western Digital's Warranty Policy, note the following (my bold underline added):
Limitation of Remedies

YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY FOR ANY DEFECTIVE PRODUCT IS LIMITED TO THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE PRODUCT.

WD may elect which remedy or combination of remedies to provide in its sole discretion. WD shall have a reasonable time after determining that a defective Product exists to repair or replace a defective Product. WD's replacement Product under its limited warranty will be manufactured from new and serviceable used parts.

Seagate has a similar RMA replacement policy.

And I agree with the others - the warranty only covers the hardware, not your data.

I bought 10TB WD GOLD Enterprize DATA Center HARD Drive, usable is only 9.09TB
