Award-winning international games label Team17 today announced that Forged Battalion, the innovative and dynamic new take on the real-time strategy genre from Command & Conquer veterans Petroglyph will be available via Steam early access on 16th January 2018. In Forged Battalion players build and customize their own unique faction as they fight in a variety of skirmish, solo and multiplayer battles. They will create, customize, and develop the blueprints of their emerging faction to create ever-evolving factories and units. Using resources gained from each battle, they will unlock new options through the tech tree allowing them to choose the archetype, and an array of armors, locomotors, weapons, and special abilities such as stealth and regeneration that will make each player's faction one of a kind.

"The early access release of Forged Battalion is a vital part of developing the game." Chuck Kroegel CEO of Petroglyph said. "We want fans to truly help forge what the game becomes so it's important to get them into the game as soon as possible and start giving us their feedback. We can't wait to see the unique factions that the community will create. We'll see you on the battlefield!"

Early Access Launch Content available on January 16th will be as follows:
  • Campaign missions comprising the first act of a multi-act storyline
  • Skirmish maps supporting up to eight players
  • Multiple Skirmish game modes including HQ Destruction and Annihilation
  • Dedicated servers to support multiplayer
  • Five customizable archetypes of vehicles (infantry, light vehicle, heavy vehicle, air and turrets)
  • Resource management of tech tree points earned in tactical battles

The Early Access period for Forged Battalion is planned to run for several months, during which there will be regular content drops which will be outlined via a roadmap on the Steam forum.

I thought old school strategies will never return...

Calm yer teets for a second here.
Didn't those guys already decided to revive the genre with that pixelated voxel graphics game that ended up mediocre?

I really hope this one will feel like Generals\Red Alert.

Generals was my favorite, I hope so too.

Look forward to this. I enjoyed Grey Goo, I didn't get into the 8-bit series.

This looks like a mix of 8-bit and Warzone 2100 with the unit modules/design idea. I like it and will be keeping an eye. I'm usually a sucker for a new RTS to enjoy! :D

heh the idea feels too complex to implement properly. Very unlikely that multiplayer gonna be playable with such mechanics. As long as there's multi choice, eventually people will figure out the best formula, and publish it. It's gonna be a never ending balancing, like in diablo.

What's up with those graphics? They were already dated 10 years ago.

How's the campaign in GG?

Petroglyph & Team17 making a game together? Yes please!
I really hope this one will feel like TiberianSun\RedAlert2.
Fixed that for ya. Generals, IMHO, was total rubbish compared to C&C-TS and C&C-RA2. Of course, C&C3-TW was excellent. Generals needed more refinement as it very much felt half-arsed.

Totally worth a play through IMHO. Its decent but not great. Overall development and quality is solid and gameplay is good albeit a little on the slower pace at times.

Pretty much this. C&C3 TW and Kane's Wrath are the last RTS I really enjoyed both in terms of gameplay and story. Sad EA killed C&C universe, with C&C4 is a pile of garbage.

I hope this will be good. I wanted to play proper RTS again. Homeworld type RTS are not my forte.

This sums it up for me..

I have mixed feelings about C&C4. As a sequel to the C&C Tiberium storyline, it was lacking and completely unworthy of the franchise name. BUT, if you play and judge the game on it's own merits, it's actually a ton of fun. I was bemoaning the game to a freind at the time and he suggested setting aside my bias and look at it for what it is. It was entirely enjoyable after that.

I've never played the Homeworld series. Someone told me that it was enjoyable. It's on GOG. Was thinking of giving them a try.

Generals was my fav as well, alot different from the normal C&C but we all enjoyed it so much that we still play it in 2017, followed by Kanes Wrath which I played in competitions back in the day, came in Second.

Graphics doesnt mean much, its all about the game play, Generals doesnt look anything special these days but still one of the all time greats of C&C.

I also enjoyed Red Alert 3, the expansion though was trash.

C&C4 was EA's way of killing off the franchise.

It didn't look like anything special back then. I really don't understand how people got into it. It was ugly as hell, clunky and looked like a poorly slapped together N64 game. The construction tree had no reasonable logic and it was anything but fun, in comparison to TS/RA2 before it and TW/RA3 after. But hey, I'm one of those people who think FF7 was garbage compared to earlier and later entries in the FF series and yet people rave about it and claim it's the best FF ever.. :kookoo:

Whew, faith restored. I grew worried when someone praised Generals and someone promptly agreed with him. It wasn't good at all and not until the expansion that brought the units necessary to patch all the holes in did it become decent enough and not a wall-head banging experience when playing especially playing against someone using the perpetually OP as heck jets.

Quote; " will be available via Steam "
Forgot to mention this earlier, but hopefully the devs will also do a GOG release.

I dont think it was that bad lol I remember cranking up the graphics back in 2005 with my brand new AMD 3700+ and my 7600GT and it looked alright. alot better then on the older PC with a XP 2100+ and the MX440. Each to there own I guess but for me and alot of my freinds really liked it, pretty much everyone I talk to around here found it to be one of there fav C&C titles, heck I have three copies here of it all with expansions as my brother wanted it and my mate wanted it as well, great game! Just wish they didnt cancel Generals 2, was so looking forward to that.

Jeezus, the graphics looks like a SVGA put through the first 3dfx Voodoo card with 16bit dithering...

Ok that was a couple years after it came out on much more advanced hardware than it was originally designed for. To be honest, it's been a a long while since I played it. The last time I tried running it was on a Radeon 8500 128MB, Pentium4 1.8ghz and 1GB RDRam. I do own it currently. Might be time to take it for a spin again..

Back to the main topic, it seems the reason that they are not pushing the visuals to much is that most hardware can run a well made RTS easily with a fair amount of pretty enabled on even Intels GPU's, thus reaching a wider audience. This seems like a good idea if they can balance the elements of the game right, which both of these studio's have proven they can. Question is; Will they?

You guys worry about the graphics, I worry about the storyline and gameplay. I still play the game in my avatar late in 2017, why? Because the game is pretty damn good and great storyline. I really hope there isn't any unit caps so you can either play tactically or just go nuts spamming tanks.
