It's really pretty straight forward.
If you don't like the price of the phone, it's features, or the battery policy ...
Don't buy one.

If apple wants to charge $90 for a battery replacement and people are willing to pay it, good for them. It's their company and they can do whatever they want.

I neither love nor hate apple. They are simply another company with products.
I wouldn't buy an iPhone now as I feel the feature set is weak for the cost, but it may be greatly improved in the future through hardware, firmware and software upgrades.
That being said, I think the way you use the phone is very innovative and more intuitive than most of the other phones available.

Just my 2 cents.

Who the heck can afford to be without their cell phone for 3 days? And I'm assuming it's "business days" too... I doubt that a Friday sendoff would result in a Monday return.

That being said though... in the past, when I've sent my iPod in for server, I'd get a 1-2 day turn around and even got it back Saturday Delivery once without even asking. If they still have that mentality of getting it back to the customer as quickly as possible, then it may not be so bad. However, I hope that perhaps replacements at the Apple Stores might be an option rather than a send-away.
