A report from analyst firm Superdata has put in perspective the craze regarding Battle Royale-type games. Fortnite, developed by EPIC, is now estimated to have earned more than $1 billion in revenue since its launch last year. And it all seems to be going uphill - the game earned some $304 million in May alone solely on its in-game microtransactions, a 4% increase over the still impressive $296 million figure in April. Consider that EPIC only added the Battle Royale game mode last September, and the voracious pace of revenue increase becomes obvious - just the months of May and April account for more than half of the $1 billion being reported here.

Make no mistake: like in all things, there will be an inevitable tumble in popularity and revenue as the game ages, even if it has just now entered its fifth season. However, the rhythm at which funds are flowing into EPIC's coffers will surely enable an even bigger, more impressive experience come Fortnite's successor, which you can bet will be ready to pick up the slack once revenue slows down. It becomes hard not to justify developers' options towards developing these kinds of games over others - it really does seem to be this is where most money's at.

I really don't understand the almost mass hysteria fascination over this stuff...

I still dont understand where are the cooperations with burger king.
I WANT MY GOD DAMN MC-BATTLE-ROYAL

WTH....I played this for ~30 mins and got bored to bits...

Played it for like a month , haven't spent a dime on shitty skins or whatever the hell and that was about it. This game is already in the past for me.

Just gonna put this out there: May month is like the prime time of year when Danes age 13-14 have a lot of money due to their "confirmation", aka rebaptism of sorts.. Kids running around with $5-10K just throwing it around like they are Jeff Bezos.

In return Epic reduced the cost for the UE4.

But ofcourse you don't hear people talk about that.

so much for the lawsuit, can now just pay off pugbee dramasuit

It can be the only reason.... I sure as hell cant think of any... lol.

What’s so fun about this game

I just couldn’t get into it

why is so popular?
I guess maybe it is a human nature to race and become apex predator in the planet
even in the game, so players going to fight each other to death to get #1 spot.

at least Epic Games didn't force anyone to buy flashy skins or lock them behind an RNG lootbox where the chance of getting them takes you at least 5 decades to get one, on top of buying keys to unlock them OR locking all season pass behind a paywall that only last for 2 weeks.

Yeah, the gametype has been around since the old 2.5D FPS days. It's nothing really new. But for some reason it scratches an itch in kids. I'd hypothesize because of the hunger games series. The itch has been there for awhile, just nothing has really come out to scratch it well enough until they merged a survival builder with it. Which in turn rode the success of Day Z.

I mean, technically "Battle Royale" is "Last Man Standing" mode from arena shooters back from the 90's or the regular mode from original CounterStrike. They just fiddled a bit with weapons selecting and shoved in lootboxes. And that's about it.

Plays like Minecraft with guns. I can see why the younger crowd likes this game.

I hope they use the money to create another decent Unreal Tournament game.

Nah, they are done with that franchise. They'll be focussing on another gears of war instead.

There is already one in beta stage. You can even play it for free from Epic site. But nothing spectacular....

I guess I'm getting too old to get this. I do like PUBG however. But Fortnite is just too cartoonish to me!

The title almost sounds like you guys have a problem with that.

It's not just younger crowd though. It's pretty mainstream.. The true sign of a successful game: when celebs start talking about playing. lol. Along the lines of WoW or something, I guess.

This game is not too fun if you ask me. I can undestand teenagers, kids and those who want very casual or easy to play games liking this one.

Many of the people that play this game aren't "kids". Just because a game is cartoonish or isn't realistic doesn't mean it's boring. People that play it solo and try it for a few days aren't going to have fun. The game is really fun to play in parties and funny stuff happens all the time.

It's just fun once you get good enough to have said fun. I don't care that people don't like the game, but calling it trash is annoying. It's very well developed game that receives bi-weekly updates and continuous rewards for players for basically $10 bucks initially.

It's also not an "easy" game. The skill set is pretty high to be able to build/edit/fight without taking damage from multiple fronts.

Edit: I used fun way to much here. It is what it is.
