Microsoft's Windows 10 is now used on Over 900 Million Devices

Microsoft's corporate vice president of the "Modern Life, Search and Devices" group, Yusuf Mehdi sent out a Tweet today that the company's Windows 10 operating system is now being used on over 900 million devices.

Windows 7, one of the most popular legacy operating systems will reach end-of-support in just a few months, which should definitely drive up Windows 10 adoption rates, too. Let's hope Microsoft takes this milestone as a reason to improve the QA testing of their OS updates, as a lot of users have experienced issues recently.

It will be a nice feature if you add a third option "not on windows". I changed my win7 with Manjaro and I'm quite happy. Wine does work for the games I'm playing.

I don't think it is the right term here "Forced". MS wants its users to use the latest version to cut down the support for win 7. You can always go Linux or Android

There is one thing that WIndows 10 does better than any previous version of Windows. Attach the licence to your MB. I also look at the fact that legitimate keys have been readily available for less than $20 ever since it launched (well after the free upgrade period was over).

I use Windows 10 at work - it's okay. I'm still not a fan of it. Though, a lot of the updates are held back/limited to whatever our IT guy lets through. All computers at work on Windows 10 are rocking version 17134 (also known as version 1607 and codenamed "Redstone 1").

I've had horrible experiences with Win 10 on my Plex server - the forced updates to new versions have broken Windows so bad before that the install couldn't even be repaired, just an outright cluster F. With two major failures with Win 10 updates, I've gone through to disable any updates on my Plex server for Windows and it's why I haven't put Windows 10 on my gaming PC.

MS sucks ass with their craptastic failures of updates, if you ask me.

valid to the point when you can't install other os; in the past we had certain laptops locked to support specific os version... in don't know if those producers are doing the same now but if yes than for sure M$ has a lot to do with that...

i had a personal experience with one locked to win8 .... and couldn't found a solution to change os...

Windows 10 is alright now. It was released in a somewhat bugged state but that's because MS doesn't spend much on quality assurance and testing.

Don't mix laptops into this. Laptops are from a vendor like Dell or Hp or other. They have they own rules and agreements with MS for selling Windows OS which is coming with the laptop and thus preventing to interfere with the OS. You can see that in the Bios option available as well or recovery of the system with certain vendor applications for recovery. Windows itself doesn't block any other OS'es to coexist with it. That is totally different.

srry but laptops are pc's also and those 900 mill. win10 OS's are on 900 mill. devices including laptops maybe 50%....

Never said they are not. But the problem with installing other OS software on certain laptops is not due to Windows OS. Maybe I didn't make my point clear here. Laptops are computers and can be counted as they are contributing to the 900Mil Windows users but windows has nothing to do with blocking other software from being installed. That was my point. The laptop vendors do it due to their agreement or other things.

Well, as a mfg you can't exactly build a laptop and put Ubuntu on it instead of Windows or OS X. Unless of course they want a 99% return rate and bankruptcy. There is a reason all Linux variants share a desktop 1-2% market share.

That's true. Most PCs are used by businesses and having talked to the IT dept. at work it was a nightmare for them to upgrade the thousands of PCs from Windows 7 to Windows 10. People were hammering them for help because so much of the Windows 10 was different from Windows 7. I can't even imagine what it would take to get so many PCs onto Ubuntu. People at work would be pulling out their hair in frustration. That's the real reason that the vast majority of businesses pay for Windows 10. You can't really trust Windows 7 anymore and most people that I know of never bought Windows 8.

that agreement you mention above is made between M$ and makers but guess who is asking it? who is forcing end-user to had no chance of changing the os? for sure not producer as they loose more... worst is that if they still doing this they won't mention it to buyer before purchase...

I have absolutely no issue with Windows 10. It works well, seems more stable than Windows 7 ever was for me, and it has evolved from a somewhat-better Windows 8.1 into a true modern OS. Features like Windows Subsystem for Linux, integrated OneDrive, automatic security patching, and finally a rework of the ancient settings panes that stretch back to Windows 95 are all welcome. I do have some issues sometimes finding where the settings live now but once I do find them, I feel that they are presented well enough and I just need to get used to them.

Whatever last Win 10 update that rolled out, the settings windows for Audio devices wasn't working correctly for my brother. It wasn't showing his headset or mic for an option of speakers/mic in the Windows 10 settings.

I had to remind him of the Control Panel and he went into the audio devices there and everything was showing up correctly so he could set his speakers to his headset and set his mic to be used.

I don't care for the Windows 10 settings screen - for me it tends to be a garbled bunch of settings they just threw together and I can't find what I want in it so I still utilize Control Panel.

Unless you are talking about some ARM thing with a locked bootloader, there is always choice. Maybe not the choice you want, but it's present all the same.

I mean, there is a company that does just that, but it's indeed a niche thing. This isn't a linux issue so much as it is a change issue. If so called IT expert type people here freak out when the control panel undergoes a new theme, they have no chance of coping with a new OS.
