Nightdive Studios, who are developing a remake of Looking Glass Technologies' famous System Shock, have just released an 87-minute gameplay showcase for the remade version of the game. In it, you'll get to take a look into the combat system, inventory, art and graphics design for the game (whether or not it stays true to your memory of the original is up to you, though).

The game has gone through a sort of development hell, when after garnering more than $1.4 million in crowdfunding, it was announced that the game was being put on hold. That decision was motivated by the developers' arguably overzealous take on the System Shock game, which had them continually build into the core ideas of the game - essentially rendering it as more of a heavily-inspired spiritual successor than the remake they originally envisioned. Changing game development engines from unity to Unreal was also part of the reason for the games' development delay. The game is expected to launch this year, though no specifics on exactly when have been made available. Catch the video after the break.

Looking great!

Okay... THIS IS LOOKING REAL GOOD. It's like a near-faithful remake of Citadel Station. I wonder how cyberjacking would look like though.

Looks amazing and judging how Nightdive did such a great job on Forsaken, I don't think we'll be disappointed.
Can't wait for the release date.

@Raevenlord those pictures are from Warren's System Shock 3, not NDS' System Shock 1 Remake.

I'd like to understand their decision to switch engines, Unity has much more potential and less limitations than Unreal does.

I remember having a Gaming PC back in the late 90's. System Shock 2 (1999) was not that great of a game. Half Life came out a little earlier (1998) and more people were playing that until 1999 when Counter Strike took over the internet.

I tried getting into System Shock but it was brooding, dull and boring in ways that higher presentation levels in newer games like Bio Shock aren't.

I'm hoping System Shock 3 will be more exciting...but considering the level of technology now it probably will be.

Don't know the details exactly, but the Unity rendering pipeline is crap compared to Unreal. They can both produce about the same levels of eye candy, but when you add all other game logic together, Unity is easier to work with overall but Unreal has a huge performance edge which is probably why there are virtually no AAA Unity games.

It looked better when they used the Unity Engine.

I mean UE4 is perfectly fine, but the porting didn't translate well.

They're still working on the looks. The earlier demo was so dark you could barely see what was ahead of you, in this one you can actually see stuff past your nose.
