AMD Releases Radeon Software Adrenalin 20.5.1 with Graphics Hardware Scheduling

AMD today released its first public beta driver that enables graphics hardware scheduling feature support with Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004). This oddball release has the same version number as the previous-release, version 20.5.1 Beta, but with graphics hardware scheduling retrofitted. The driver hence ships with the version name "Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.5.1 Beta with Graphics Hardware Scheduling." This Microsoft-supplied feature allows GPU hardware to better manage its resources, and potentially improve performance in certain applications. Currently, only AMD's RDNA-based Radeon RX 5600-series and RX 5700-series GPUs support graphics hardware scheduling - not even the RX 5500-series gets it; older generation AMD GPUs, such as the RX Vega series lack it, too.

Me thinks that our @W1zzard is or will be soon testing a few GPUs with that feaure on and off to get us some results. I would try with both high-end and mid-range CPUs and on CPU-bound games like AC:Odyssey and some strategy ones that work hard on AI.

This would be great for older GCN hardware. Better DRAM management. Hopefully at least it comes to Vega. Some of my friends who have Vega56 told me HBCC has been broken since 2020 driver.

nope, my current vga test system isn't on 2004 yet, and i'm working on the new 2020 pcie 4 ssd rig, and testing a bunch of upcoming cpus

The fact that it support 2 out of 3 Navi product is quite strange. i hope they will backport that to Polaris and Radeon but as they are getting better and better, i bet they will just act more like the usual market leader and screw people out to save money and less like a underdog that is trying to get people favor.

AMD did the same for all major features in the last 3-4 years (enhanced sync, anit-lag, chill, etc). They started using them for their latest GPUs initially and then enabled them for all of their CGN GPUs. So, I think they will do so for this one also. It is a beta driver after all. Let's see in 1-2 months what will be done but I am optimistic at least for this.

2 months, to get the same driver, only adding benefits to the auto power off cards. And they even forgot to add the APUs to the support list!
You really do get a "free" driver when you buy AMD products.

This driver is Navi 10 exclusive: RX 5600 and RX 5700. I tried it on my RX 5500 and it was all LOLNOPE.

They completely removed enhanced sync in this driver for me, lol. Does it not work with Hardware Scheduling or something? One wonders.

Performance is either the same or much worse (where there is HWS bugs):

HWS is a lot like DX12: by itself it doesn't do anything but it gives another avenue for Intel/AMD/NVIDIA to optimize further reducing CPU overhead. It may yield some benefits down the road, but not now.
