CD Projekt RED today issued an apology to gamers for a buggy release of Cyberpunk 2077, a game that the studio treated as its magnum opus. The open-letter apology addressed to gamers at large, and signed by CDPR higher-ups; in particular expressed regret to gamers on older-generation game consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Cyberpunk 2077 looks and plays terrible on these older consoles, despite the studio charging the same $60 for the title. Game assets such as textures are of the lowest possible resolution, as is the geometry, draw-distance, and even crowds and character models. In particular, CDPR acknowledged the fact that before launch, the studio hadn't shown footage of how the game plays on these older consoles, which deprived gamers of making more informed choices.

As a token of apology, CDPR offered gamers on these older consoles full refunds on their games purchased on Xbox or PSN. Those with physical copies of the game may return it to their retailers for refunds. CDPR set up an e-mail support service for those facing difficulties in getting refunds. For those who decide to give CDPR a chance at redemption; the studio promised a major game patch slated for January 2021, and a follow-up second-patch in February. The PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 is getting regular updates through all the platforms it's sold on (GOG, Steam, and EGS).

Don't remember Bethesda ever offering such gracious amends at the launch of ESO or ES:Skyrim.

All said, at some point you can no longer complain when you are offered a full refund.

Even when they screw it up, they still do it better than quite a few major game studios.

this is true. bravo to cdpr for this. better to address this kinda stuff head on rather than keep sweeping under the rug. respect +

Not to cut CDPR too much slack on this one, these are the kinda fiascos that should see the entire QA team fired, but boy do kids these days need to grow up! A new game that renders worse on old hardware (that wasn't particularly high end to begin with)? What a shocker!

Though, tbh, the PCMRist in me is gloating right now. Payback for a decade of subpar console ports, peasants!

So true, and at the same time, they could also just not sell it for underpowered hardware.

Let's keep in mind that "underpowered hardware" is the hardware it was originally SUPPOSED to launch on. Wake up call, the game has been in development for 8 years...since literally before the consoles in question were even released

CDK has released a game with a truly next gen graphics engine. The engine has brought the RTX 3090 to its knees in 4k (without raytracing), and even worse with ray tracing. Literally spending $1600 on a graphics card advertised to handle any 4K game, and it just can't do it.

The game was designed to be played for the next decade? The answer is yes, along with an asterisk that 4K gaming still isn't quite there.

True. But as they said they should have being more transparent about it. Like delay the ps4/xbox one versions a bit longer till its ok to release or just not release it at all. But the so call outrage was a bit wayy over tbe top

1000 buy the game
500 learn they can return it and not just regret buying it
300 do so
700 X $60 = profit

just some maths

it will take some time for fixes to arrive because all of CDPR is now busy swimming in an ocean of cash.

True! Who remembers The Witcher fiasco, and the great work they did to make amends?

Projekt Red apparently failed to optimize for any AMD users, console or PC systems.

Wow it’s so shitty they are offering a refund?

That is impressive on both counts.

My 5950X feels plenty optimized :D

/s
It compensates for the lack of SMT by just having 16 physical cores lol

CYBERPUNK NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED ON PS4 or XBOX ONE X.
I have a 3090 FTW3 with 64GB DDR4 and 8TB SSD.
This game DEMANDS an RTX card to run and it looks glorious.
Cyberpunk should NOT have been released on consoles till XBOX SERIES X and PS5 were ready.

A RTX 3090 at 4k is unable to reach 60 FPS. There is no current gen hardware capable of running the game at ultra settings at 4K at 60 fps.

With that said, games can be optimized to run at lower graphical settings across different hardware, i.e., Xbox ONE and PS4. This is standard these days. You're acting as if the game can't be enjoyed outside of 4k ultra settings.

What I don't understand is what the problem is. The PC version rocks and even plays well on older systems.

As for the console launch.... Well, that might be different. However, expecting a modern game to play the same on 8 year old non-upgradeable hardware might be asking a bit much.

Then don't use full "Ultra". Turn a few things down. For example, shadows, fog and mirror FX. The game still looks amazing with a few of them on "High" or even "Medium". That's why there are fine-grained controls, a decades old concept.

That was my exact point. Quantumphysics stated that the game can't be ran without a RTX 3090, for that reason shouldn't be released on older hardware. I *disagree*.
