Apple's Rumored Mixed-Reality Headset To Include Dual 8K Displays & Cost 3,000 USD

Apple has been rumored to be working on a mixed-reality device for some time now, expected to launch in 2022 and target the premium market. We have recently received information from a source with direct knowledge of the device who claims the new headset will feature dual 8K displays, eye tracking, inside out tracking, and swappable headbands. The report details a late-stage prototype device with a sleek curved visor design attached to the head with interchangeable headbands that offer features like spatial audio and extra battery.

The device would not include any traditional controllers instead relying on inputs such as eye movement, and hand gestures, or a physical finger ring device. The headset would include limited augmented reality features such as pass-through video from the over dozen cameras mounted on the device. The report also corroborates previous reports with an estimated price of 3,000 USD launching in 2022 and targeting first-year sales of 250,000 units before releasing a more advanced AR device in 2023.

I used to have a few masks that looked like that, but mine came with snorkels.

That price is not set in stone, I estimate, by launch day, it will be closer to $1k

That seems a bit optimistic. I know it's Apple, but what would quarter of a million of buyers actually do with this "half VR" gizmo?

I think you are too optimistic. If you look at the price Apple charges for their displays, just the monitor stand itself costs 1K, and the display is another 5K. So it is highly unlikely they will charge you 1K for this headset.

Valve charged $1k for their headset and it sold like cupcakes. Apple could charge their cultists $5k and it'd sell.

The Index was actually good though.

Too bad it's Apple...

Remember: when apple push; the push allows others to follow. So this is good when it comes to hardware production and dominant design (to some degree)

I think the only truth in the rumor is the price. :p

Apples are for eating only and I would not pay that much for those :P

Unless those VR gizmos are sold under 399$, the VR will never take off as they would expect.

What is the purpose of this product, the focus of it, the end goal?
For streaming videos?
For digital meetings?
For gaming?
For linking up with Musk's Neuralink to help create the first Matrix - Matrix 1.0?
For designing a Ready Player One reality?

true, so maybe less than 2k?
No way. $1K alone just for the bitten apple logo.

At least $2K minimum. If they sell their phones for $1K, I guarantee a 8K dual display headset will cost as much. Add in any motion control stuff and it will get more expensive.

3000$ ?

You'd think but you underestimate how much Apple sheep are willing to pay for "clout." If it has an Apple logo and it is expensive they need to have it regardless of what it does.

Have you priced out a laptop to use for work with 64GB of ram and a half decent GPU? Your options are basically a 16" MacBook Pro or a Dell Precision Mobile Workstation and the Precision is more expensive than the MBP for a similar loadout, not to mention is bigger, heavier, and has worse battery life (forget my opinions about using nVidia.) Not to mention you have to pay a lot more for Dell's service than for AppleCare. I'd love to hear your explanation for how I'm a sheep though, if you're going to make wide reaching claims like that. ;)

The thing I like about Apple is that out of all the devices I've used, they're the ones that typically "just work" the best and when I use a device for my job, I can't be fiddling with it because a kernel update did something dumb or because bleeding edge mesa broke my system. It needs to just work. This isn't something everyone needs, particularly if your main consideration is gaming, but I wouldn't call people sheep just because you don't have the same needs or budget as others.

With that said:

I'd like to make an amendment to this. Forum Guidelines clearly state:
Be polite and Constructive, if you have nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all.
