4A Games is one of those rare developers that seemingly gives more to its fans and game-owners than it takes. The company has just announced they're readying a new, Enhanced Edition version of Metro Exodus - receiving significant graphical updates that are mostly focused on added raytracing capabilities. The new version of the game will be made available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles - but carries additional features in the all-powerful PC version, including Ray Traced Reflections (which will not be included in the console version) as well as support for NVIDIA's DLSS 2.0, the best iteration of the technology so far.

According to the developer, the engine changes are so substantial that they couldn't push it as a simple update/game patch - the entire game has had to be recompiled to allow for the seamless integration of the new features. 4A Games announced that the new, Enhanced Edition, which will be available later this year, will be available for all Metro Exodus owners as a free, additional download. The new version makes such extensive usage of raytracing - every light source is now raytraced, per-pixel-raytraced global illumination, and a plethora of other changes you can see in the feature comparative below - that the company is now listing a raytracing-capable GPU (whether AMD or NVIDIA) as the minimum requirement. Now if only one could find decent raytracing graphics cards readily available...

I'm confused.

I'm confused.

As clearly was I :banghead: thanks, fixed! (up there and in the story as well)

It should be slow enough now to qualify as a walking simulator.

This makes even more people to want a new RTX 3000 series card and in this actual situation we gamers are desperate.

So this is dangerous, scalpers will get the money they want.

Although I'm not really interested in investing in RTX (frankly, the graphic improvement seems too costly), I still want to see how much better this turns out to be.

@W1zzard will you be reviewing Metro Exodus again whenever this new edition becomes available?

DLSS 2.0 will be really nice.

Not sure yet. Looks a bit like an Microsoft/Sony/NVIDIA/AMD sponsored cash grab? Because I doubt anyone who wants to play the game hasn't played it yet

I wasn't asking for the game itself, but rather about how much all this "throw RTX at everything and anything" (plus the newest iteration of DLSS) move would change visuals. And the upgrade is supposed to be free for all current owners of the game, so I doubt that it will amount to a lot more sales (though I can see all four companies throwing money at Deep Silver / 4A to make this anyway).

You ain't getting out of this one that easily, considering how heavily everyone reviewed it for graphics performance on release. I understand it won't be much fun, and would be quite the trudge to get through re-reviewing.

It's just too bad mesh shaders didn't get introduced in time. This is a game that can use such a performance uplift.

So the obvious question is how playable it will be? Sounds like 3080+ will struggle even on FullHD.

You could actually play the game with RTX set to ultra on a 2070 @ 1080p 60 FPS when W1zz did the testing

And the devs did say they were introducing further optimizations in the engine, so I don't expect it to be that impactful in terms of performance.

The real question is how playable will it be with all the bling maxed out @ 4K

So my copy of Metro Exudus Redux
will run worse for free
YAY
They already did that WITH REDUX

It's separate.

why not at the very least test DLSS vs DLSS 2.0?
I have the game, want to play but haven't because I figured one day they would update it exactly like this, FOV alone is huge to me. What about when the Witcher 3 with RTRT comes out? Skipping that one because whoever wants to play probably played the original already?

- Infinite number of ray trace bounces

This will kill ANY graphics card existed on the planet.......

it wont kill it will just result in poor frame rates

Finished the base games but haven't started the 2 DLCs yet, this would be a good reason to play the game again and the 2 DLCs.

While this is a good gesture from the developer to give it a good graphical update to give the game a boost in interest, I feel most people that have completed the game will not find this a meaningful reason to replay it. I guess most will just update, go into the game to look and see before they get bored of it. To be honest, I rather the developer spent more time to add interesting contents to the story or gameplay instead of focusing on graphics as a way to sell. Most cards will fare very badly with all these eye candy and I am unsure how much a bump in performance can one get with DLSS 2.0 enabled.

When is this launching anyway?
also does anyone know if the redux version will also be upgraded

I can agree with that, but I also see an opportunity for the developer to put the new engine to the test.

During the northern hemisphere's spring apparently, so March to June of this year.

i havent played it yet, i dont want to play at sub 60fps and low graphics quality, id rather wait until i can get a good gpu and then enjoy it maxed at 90fps+

This is just amazing news. It was such a shame that it was left in the state it was, with old smudgy DLSS that cannot even be enabled for many resolutions, and also no multi GPU support, so it had neither of the features that would make it possible to experience the game to it's full potential in the present without waiting one more GPU generation, if not two. Now it will finally almost get the treatment it deserves.
