Intel 12th Generation Alder Lake Platform Reportedly Brings 20% Single-Threaded Performance Uplift

Intel only just announced their 11th generation Rocket Lake-S desktop processors last week but we are already receiving information about the next generation Alder Lake-S platform which will finally make the jump to 10 nm. Intel slides for the upcoming family of processors have been leaked and they reveal some interesting information including a claimed 20% single-threaded performance increases from the new Golden Cove core design and 10 nm SuperFin node. The processors will feature Intel Hybrid Technology with a mix of small low-performance cores and large high-performance cores with a maximum of eight each for sixteen total cores. The processors will also include the latest connectivity with both PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 support along with DDR4 and DDR5 4800 MHz compatibility.

Intel will also be launching a new socket type called LGA1700 with a new package size which will render existing cooling solutions for LGA115X and LGA1200 sockets incompatible. The processors will also come with the launch of a new 600 Series chipset with PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0 support along with the usual complement of USB, SATA, and networking. The entry-level 600-series motherboards will only support DDR4 memory at up to 3200 MHz while high-end Z690 motherboards will include DDR5 support. Intel has confirmed that they intend to launch Alder Lake later this year but it is yet to be known if they are referring to the desktop or mobile series.

PCIe 5.0 seems premature, especially as it's only for the x16 slot.
Up to eight lanes for the chipset is also interesting.
Both PCIe 4.0 & 3.0 for the chipset...
What a mess.
Only the top of the range of the Z690 boards are likely to get DDR5 support from what I've heard. Most will use DDR4.

well duh as it even says exactly that in this article...

No, it says that only Z690 boards will get it, but that's not quite true, as only a few models will get it, as the motherboard makers aren't expecting DDR5 to be widely available at a reasonable cost. As such, expect most Z690 boards to use DDR4. Edited my comment for clarification.

I remeamber when DDR4 was new in mid 2014, 16gb kit costed something like like 300$, it took till the end if 2015 for prices to stabilize into reasonable rates, 129$ for 16gb
And we'll see something similar again.

The only reason why PCIe 5.0 & especially now v6 exists is because of one-upmanship by Intel. That's the (only) major point they can tout against the Zen juggernaut & frankly even enterprises won't care!

20% more ST compared to what? Tigerlake or skylake? If that’s on top of tigerlake (which was around 19% faster than skylake), then these could finally be pretty fast.

Funnily in the slide it is written ”up to 20% performance”, which indicates a 80% performance regression. ;)

it says "high-end Z690 motherboards will include DDR5 support" which is exactly what you said that you "heard"

Intel is in panic mode still, so trying to hyping something like pcie5 is needed, with a "but...".

I'm waiting for the other foot to say, btw there is a new socket...

Didnt Skylake support DDR4\ DDR3 across most boards from midrange to high end, only the lowest 60$ boards stuck on DDR3.
With entery Z boards being around 189- 219$, how much will you be willing to pay for DDR5 support, considering also it will be crazy pricy just like when DDR4 launched with X99, i even remember seeing a corsair dominator platinum DDR4 back then for 800$ lol

Oof, was that really necessary, it wasn't bad enough people have to upgrade intel motherboards but now coolers as well :(

That's one way for Intel to keep the heat and power consumption down. ;)

This is why I'm waiting for Alder Lake. So many improvements and released so soon after Rocket Lake, that it's obsolete before it even got started.

I think Intel +20% IPC increase is as accurate as those TDPs.

Too much marketing these last years.

Skipping Rocket lake. This is the only CPU worth getting.
Skip ADL too to times when all PCIe linen on board are 5.0 and all speculations with DDR5 are gone in past. Intel play a bad game with consumers but AMD try to be new Intel with premium prices on last generation. Madness!

Dam i farted and they got a new gen out nearly. Hey here's what we have new BTW it's going be dated soon after.

If ADL top out at 8 cores AMD is gonna have a field day with them

I mean...everything COULD be really fast, the fact that they use the "up to" attachment makes me feel these wont be all that impressive.
I mean if on AVERAGE they were 20% faster maybe....but up to?

They could literally make a program themselves which actively does poorly on older designs of theirs and specifically runs better on Alderlake and then with that one purpose-build program they can make the claim that Alderlake is "UP TO" 120% faster....

Skipping Rocket lake. This is the only CPU worth getting.

Based on....nothing at all....great

Their marketing materials will be saying 16 cores, OEM marketing materials will be saying 16 cores, 90 plus % of consumers will believe they are buying a 16 core CPU.

Why 90 plus % of consumers choose to believe before they know what is inside that they buy? Low educated?

You mean like the time AMD get a class action lawsuit for calling Bulldozer 8 cores CPU  ?
