MSI to Hike Graphics Card Pricing, Expects GPU Supply to Remain Tight Throughout 2021

MSI is planning to raise prices of its graphics cards, according to a DigiTimes report, according to company chair Joseph Hsu, speaking at an investors conference on Tuesday. He stated that the company expects demand for motherboards, gaming notebooks, and graphics cards, to remain robust throughout 2021, with shipment increases to be had in the range of 30-50%. The DigiTimes report points to the likelihood of new GPU launches by NVIDIA in Q2-2021, and Intel 500-series chipset motherboards to positively impact MSI's shipments. Besides overwhelming demand, import duties and rising logistics costs are blamed for rising hardware prices.

And I remember paying $250 for Geforce 9800GT which even with inflation should cost less than $300 today. These "midrange" GPUs today are a joke with some commanding more than flagship level MSRPs.

I guess in Joseph's position, when faced with an investors meeting, didn't took him long to think of the question "Why not?" regarding this.
Even consoles are not safe, as someone reaped even the available Xbox One S/X (not the 'Series'!) from store shelves in a single day, from the local largest retailer.
Right now, by my reasoning, any technology item that can be perceived as desirable will be hoarded, even if it is a previous model, as long as it is boxed. Older, used ones will track a premium as well, just because it is what is left.
Crazy times. Really feels like typical speculation/trading frenzy that will bust...eventually. Just never thought that it would start with graphics cards.

Flagship MSRP seems to change all the time. The 8800GTX was a 600$ flagship (the 2080ti and the 3090 are just oddities not worth the price unless you need the vram for work) but then a couple of year later you had the 4870 which was a 300$ GPU with flagship like performance. The relationship between the x70 and the x80 also seems to change all the time. Sometimes it's so close that the x8 is a bad buy, other time the gap is noticeable.

Retail prices are already inflated with next to zero #tock, but sure it’s fine if they Jack it up even more and expect months for another trickle of stock...sure sounds fine can’t or forget about those poor companies profits already well over intended MSRP projections
