Microsoft is preparing to refresh its Xbox Series X/S console lineup in 2023 with a faster processor. Dubbed the Xbox Series X Elite, the console is expected to feature a refreshed semi-custom SoC built on the 6 nm silicon fabrication process, with higher clock speeds. The console itself is expected to undergo a design change to look more cuboidal, similar to the Xbox One X, departing from the tower-type design. A design concept of the console was put out by Let's Go Digital, with a sleek body and cooling that's optimized for the updated SoC. There are also some LED lighting elements. We should hear more about the console throughout 2022.

Hardware refresh 3 years after launch.... Yeah i can believe that, PS4 and Xbox one launched in 2013 and got refreashed in 2016, three years after launch.
I dont believe they will go with this concept tough, looks like something Razer would make

Uglier than the existing monolith design. Good job MS won't be using them for the design.

4 years for Xbox. XB One X (Nov 2017) has 4x more GPU power than a normal Xbox One, and came 4 years later. At least a lot of the games were in 4k as promised. PS4 Pro came 3 years after PS4 and promised to delivery 4k, 4x higher res than 1080p, yet only had 2.3 times more power.

I suppose the advantage here is no one cares about 8k. It's just not needed, so the extra power can go to running 4k with more fidelity.

That's not possible with the current gen unless AMD goes 5nm & full chiplet route! A single die (SoC) will not have enough room, literally & figuratively, nor TDP for such a leap not to mention node advances have slowed down to a crawl as compared to a decade back.

Where all these refresh rumors are coming from? I highly doubt becuase of the current shortages situation, low market saturation, the much better specs of this generation consoles (ps4 and one were weak already when released originally) and low amount of games utilizing full capabilities of new systems will anyhow drive manufacturers to refresh until waaaay later when it may become a new generation, rather than refresh. Bullshitnews is more what it looks like.

As usual, the final product will look absolutely nothing as renders you can find on the internet.

The refresh/sucessor will be called Series X (Mark) II. That is the whole point of calling it series. Look at the elite controller, the next gen they just called "Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2".

I can see this as a true 4k120 with some RayTracing.

GPU and CPU efficiency coupled with a better process node may make it possible. I remember wondering what we were gonna do with or for 1080P with games to get great framerates with all the effects turned up years ago, and now its easily done by midrange cards.

I thought one of the major arguments for getting a console rather than a PC for gaming was the price. I feel like "refreshing" the same generation every few years with slightly better hardware kinda defeats that.

Gsus, looks like a DVR recorder from 10 years ago. And the glossy surfaces are just a magent for fingerprints & dust.
But still better than what Microsoft & Sony ships. These ugly "things" don't even fit in a HiFi rack.

Here's a fresh leak from my GIMP, "xBox - Slim Edition". Hell I would insta buy that.

They should just outsource production to Lenovo & call it a day. Or "hire" their designers.

Slightly better is that a mistake

Xbox One was a huge leap over the Xbox 360

Xbox One X was also a huge leap over the Xbox One offering well over 50% performance uplift

and again Xbox Series X is a large upgrade over the Xbox One X. Offering again over 50% performance uplift

even better the MSRP stayed exactly the same while offering a true upgrade

so try again buddy

Try reading my post again. I'm not talking about entirely new generations, I'm talking about these meager improvements within the same generation, which is what this article is about.

It’s still not a meager improvement

from what I’ve pulled it gets a new 5nm CPU with 3D Cache and it gets a beefier RDNA2 GPU with more RAM

Sure, the specs will be better. I never tried arguing that. My point was that it's still a meager improvement when you compare these slight mid-generation upgrades to an actual next-generation console. Now your Xbox/PS5 is worth less as a gaming console because at least some developers will target the higher model for their game, leaving you with a diminished experience, unless you spend your $$$($) on the same generation console.

So, instead of console manufacturers using advancements in the silicon manufacturing process to make their same console in a cheaper, more efficient fashion, they instead push the envelope a little more, incentivizing everyone to upgrade to the same (marginally better) console. Gone are the days where a single console purchase will last you a good, long while... which, at least in my opinion, was part of the argument for buying consoles. Now it's become more like PC gaming, when you're gonna want to upgrade all the time.

But again that isn’t accurate

as even now the OG Xbox One is still supported and can still play current Gen games. Yes the experience isn’t as great but it’s still playable. That’s a 8 year old Console that is still updated and games on daily

no matter how you slice it consoles have always had a lifespan of about 5-10 years

and if you want a cheaper console that’s more efficient and still next Gen, that’s the exact reason Microsoft created the Xbox Series S. It has a lower cost point while still supporting next Gen features and it will have support for the next 5-7 years

No matter how you try to spin it, consoles still outlast PCs by a long shot
