Extreme overclocking is an enthusiast discipline where overclockers try to push their hardware to extreme limits. Combining powerful cooling solutions like liquid nitrogen (LN2), which reaches sub-zero temperatures alongside modified hardware, the silicon can output tremendous power. Today, we are witnessing a custom XOC (eXtreme OverClocking) BIOS for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card that can push the GA102 SKU to impressive 890 Watts of power, representing almost a two-fold increase to the stock TDP. Enthusiasts pursuing large frequencies with their RTX 3090 Ti are likely users of this XOC BIOS. However, most likely, we will see GALAX HOF or EVGA KINGPIN cards with dual 16-pin power connectors utilize this.

As shown below, MEGAsizeGPU, the creator of this BIOS, managed to push his ASUS GeForce RTX 3090 Ti TUF with XOC BIOS to 615 Watts, so KINGPIN and HOF designs will have to be used to draw all the possible heat. The XOC BIOS was uploaded to our VGA BIOS database, however, caution is advised as this can break your graphics card.

Yeah, but I work only with AMD.

Seriously, though, I guess nvidia knows that new Radeon RX 6950 XT 16 GB will be extremely fast, so prepared this special BIOS to try to keep a record or two in the benchmarks...

Sure, but the RTX 4090 (and 4080) will beat the 6950 XT 16 GB.

They'll continue to leapfrog each other, generally because they release at different periods.

Yeah, but the Radeon RX 7900 XT will be faster than an RTX 4090 ;)

Why does nvidia use the Ti suffix and not Ultra anymore? Ultra is its legacy naming...

This is getting silly. 890w?!? NVidia needs a reality check and fast.

Just wait to see a 4090 with 1100-watt BIOS ;)

This only seems to bother older users like us lol. There are people eagerly anticipating the high wattage parts.. They weren't around for the power hungry stuff we had a decade or more ago. When you actually needed an 850 PSU for a mid range setup lol.

I will probably sit out this gen coming up. I don't want to invest expensive high end hardware that also costs a bunch to run. Just not feeling it this round.

They will learn pretty quickly that their sales margins drop off and people will go with older Radeon, nv parts and newer Radeon Parts.

These parts will be ovens for sure

More current means more heat

No, but they hold the VBIOS encryption keys & tools and would have approved it. They are also apparently preparing a 900w 4090.

Pretty sure the 1000W 3090 BIOS that voids warranties wasn't signed either. People making custom firmware don't go through nVidia, they just use unsigned firmware builds or patches.

My concern is not so much the high power usage, but with the raw wattage. In combination with other parts in the subject PC and adding to that everything else that will be on a typical home power circuit, these high wattage cards are getting very close to overloading typical household power limits. I live in an home built in the 1980's and it is equipped with 1500w circuit breakers. I'm not rewiring my house just for a high performance PC.

NVidia(and everyone else) need to find better ways to increase performance WITHOUT increasing power draw.

I feel you there.

AFAIK, you can't make a VBIOS without NVidia's tools or there would have been much more BIOS modding going on.

Considering voltage is limited to 250V to the home the current has to be increased, or 3 phase electricity has to be used

So i see the 4090 being exactly like a FX5800/5900, fermi.

Hothogs.

One advantage of obscene power draws is reduced mining profitablity

Seems only AMD and Arm are aiming for power efficiency. nVidia used to focus on this, Pascal was great then they come with the awful Turing and Ampere that was competitive against Turing (reviewers were weirldy oblivious to this praising Ampere), AMD on the other hand had Vega and the like, but with RDNA they brought power under control, on laptop it's a bloodbath, Intel's parts are awfully inefficient (in real life, not unrealistic tests).

I'm like half positive all vBIOS have to be signed by NIVIDA. because you can't mod the vBIOS of NVIDIA cards for awhile now. Now the signing could be pre-done already letting the vendor decide what to change...though I highly doubt they didn't know this 900watt vBIOS existed.

Its brands like Asus or Gigabyte actually holding up to these quite exclusive tools.

A top limit of 890w is'nt so difficult to accomplish. The chip has quite some shaders, cores and all that and every Mhz extra counts into more power being consumed. If the chip was'nt so large the total power consumption woud'nt be so high. This is simply the tradeoff of one large chip.

It is basicly 6970 x2 Quad crossfire territory. And 800W of power needs to be cooled directly. The heat density would be so astronomus. You cant just cool this with water unless your using a high end chiller with that.

only 890W? 1080Ti, 2080Ti and 3090 get 1000W XOC bioses, probably have to do with the gen5 PCIe power.
