The rumored 12 GB and 16 GB variants of the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 "Ada" graphics cards could launch simultaneously, according to MEGAsizeGPU, who broke the story about the presence of two memory-based variants of the RTX 4080. A simultaneous launch of the two would make things similar to that of the GTX 1060 series, which came in 3 GB and 6 GB variants. Besides memory size, the two variants of the GTX 1060 differed in core-configuration (mainly CUDA core count), which widened the performance gulf between the two. The more recent example of memory-based variants is with the RTX 3080—which comes in 10 GB and 12 GB variants with different CUDA core counts; but which were launched far apart from each other.

Is this the official info, @btarunr ?

Then why the hell I'm looking at the headline as it's something straight from the horse's mouth?

"It's rumored that ..." sounds a ton more appropriate.

12gb has to be 4070 or 4070ti. No way they actually make 2 4080s just 4gb apart.

I mean sure "if you dont care for leaks, dont click/read them and move on" but man this is just nuts imo.

Nah that 12GB version is a 4070.
This would be my guess too.

A launch lineup something like;

RTX 4060Ti 10GB
RTX 4070 12GB
RTX 4080 16GB
RTX 4090 24GB

Who cares, gimme the down low on the 4060/4060Ti.

with 6gb or 8gb or 12 GB?
I'm kinda lost here with all the different variations.

Yeah no, get me something more interesting and solid.

They made a RTX 3080 10Gb and RTX 3080 12Gb. Are you sure there is no way they would do something like that again?
Good point. 10gb was always a mistake in my opinion. 3080 shouldve been 12 from the start, just like 4080 should be 16.

At least the 12gb variant was released some time after the OG 10. Release both at the same time? Jensen must get some kind of kick off the confusion.

The GTX 1060 was funny. Hey, I got a 1060. What kind? A 1060.

1060 was infuriating because they actually removed cores along with the ram. I still can't believe the audacity to call it a 1060.

Ya'll are right. Nvidia could very well release two 4080s 4gb apart.

I think if this is true, the difference would be very small between the two, unless developers come to their senses and finally focus on improving textures.

I agree. Calling them both 4080 and releasing them simultaneously, when they already have so many potential model numbers to chose from. Would be a boneheaded choice. But hey, that would not be the first time either.

These were not released at the same time. If the TPU database is correct, you're looking at about 15 months between them

In practical terms, is 12gb likely to be a bottleneck at 4k in the next year or so?

As usual, all it takes is a carefully crafted texture pack and you'll go over any VRAM limit.
Irl, everybody designs their games around mid-range hardware so worrying about the specs of a high-end video card is unwarranted.

There might be 1 or 2 games that will benefit from more at 4k+rt on, but otherwise no. If you're willing to upgrade again in 2024 then there's nothing to worry about.

Thanks! I'll probably be upgrading in 2024 anyway, so I could make a saving but I also remember getting stung by the stingy memory on the GTX 780 back in the day...

My bet 4080 12 gigs = $699, 16 gigs = $799. Availability 12 gigs out of stock instantly, 16 gigs plenty.
It's huang's way of hiking price in recession without getting bad publicity from the press:

I play most of my games on my 4K TV and play with RTX and DLSS on, if the games have them, in 4K.

I have a handful of RTX games and none of them reach even 11GB of allocation in MSI afterburner. I do have multiple games that allocate more than 8GB though, which makes my 3070TI less than adequate, which is a shame, because since the TVs are GSYNC, the lower 3070 ti frame rate vs the 3080 ti at the same resolution, is not very noticeable. It's almost always above 60 regardless.

VR is actually the biggest GPU memory hog, with massive supersampling. It can get above 11GB allocation.

they better not make 4070 160bit 10GB :banghead:
