Diabolical New VR Headset is Designed to Kill its User IRL if Killed In-game

What did I just read, read it after waking up from my nap and I thought its a joke. 'thanks I wasn't in the best mood but this shet is funny on a crazy level.'

This post is quite dark and play hide and seek with the forum rules themselves regarding death and suicide insinuation :ohwell:

How tortured can you be to create such a product? Hopefully, there are regulatory bodies to avoid such horrors to happen...

But still... thinking about such a device to* put it in dystopian arts is something interesting, but even thinking about putting this "thing" in the real world, no no  :shadedshu::eek:

There's already a game designed for this, "Sword Art Online." a medieval swordplay-based MMORPG, which can be played with the lethal setting enabled.

Are we SURE this isn't satire????

Google it.

I did since proper sources are missing.

At this point, it is just a piece of office art, a thought-provoking reminder of unexplored avenues in game design. It is also, as far as I know, the first non-fiction example of a VR device that can actually kill the user. It won’t be the last.

dudes wack and just trying to live out his anime fantasy.

...the fuck? is this an april fool's joke article?
Why? If you can choose between suicide and this, I'd know what to pick. Way to go out, tbh :D

There are a lot of people living out fantasies, and the more digital they go, the closer they can get. That's the problem exactly with VR, its either too bad, or its too good and therefore quite risky.

Humans should learn their limits, but we only do after the fact; ethics are a thing of the past anyway, commerce rules, and apparently 'that's fine' to a vast majority. We reap what we sow.

Hi,
The great part is if killed you can't play anymore games so this better be cheap

In a way a good product, plenty of Darwin's rewards to be awarded.
Look on the bright side, it would be a great way to start a new form of gambling! Place your wagers on who survives the longest!

K well suicide isn't a joke. This entire VR blasting heads off thing isn't cool by any means and the guy designing it is going to get enough backlash for it to not pass.
Come man, you have to admit, this is kinda funny.

Are we SURE this isn't satire????
You could always try it out and let us know how it goes! Oh, wait..
(Totally 100% a joke! Please don't take offense, you left the door open on that one. :toast:)

It's not a real product, but a prototype no one sane would use designed to make headlines.

It worked.

A quick Google search shows this is real.
It's real but will never be marketed thank god.

SAO also does not "contain a setting for this," it's an Anime about a fake game, not a game, it's a friggin case of read the entire article and not just the header. btarunr didn't.

An interesting solution for people on the death row, trial by combat :D
No. The romans tried this and it was awful.

You use Linux huh?

This reminds me of the news about that guy who sold his dead mother's body to the US army so they strapped it to a chair, put explosives below and blew it to pieces in some sort of hostage rescue simulation. Guess the soldiers couldn't save the hostage.

On the wild assumption this ever passes all the legislation, chances are exceedingly high that the overwhelming majority of IRL deaths will be caused by bugs in the games. On the plus side, the devs of this headset nor the game will care, because their paying customer is too dead to complain about the issues.

Seems like an interesting suicide booth idea though, if they ever legalise those...

In a world where hundreds of young people are encouraged to commit suicide via the Internet every day, I honestly don't think we need to be putting ideas in anyone's head. If this sort of thing ever passed for humour, it is no longer funny in today's world. Techpowerup should remove this "news item" and better consider the implications of what it posts, this site also caters to a younger tech audience and young people have been known to be gullible and vulnerable... please, just remove this, I don't think its disappearance will annoy anybody and I am sure that no explanation is really required.

As a veteran who struggles with PTSD i whole heartily agree. "IF" this post is satire it should be removed. A lot of people struggle with intrusive thoughts and from the looks of this it is not an actual "new item" that is going to be distributed to the masses. Bad taste on the author of this article. Please keep this site related to actual tech.

You seem to have missed important parts of this discussion. No one is actually building it, though it seems to have been a real proposal.

John Carmack deserves better than this

Designed obsolescence perfected.

ok ... almost all has been said ... but

what the actual fudge did i just read ...

is what i exclaimed out loud after reading the article ... (to be mild and censored a bit ... ) result ... i hear a dog barking on the balcony under mine ... ohhhh f. i thought since the school holidays were over i would have peace and quiet again ... oh, well ... hum... do they do that headset in familly pack including pets? (joking joking ... )

although, nonetheless a imho case, SAO is bottom barrel (in term of design and creativity) and i still struggle to understand why that one is so popular ... oh well ... tastes and wastes, wait ... tastes and color i mean.

Buried under all the rubble of nonsense that this headset is, there is a comment from Palmer that the headset is an art installation of sorts. So, it's art. I guess.

It's not intended for use, except as some form of artistic exploration of the ultimate reality of what VR could be.

A) It's not satire; B) It will hardly pass any regulation for mass market availability; C) Technically, it's tech; D) In a way it raises awareness on the issue. I think it's better than just sweeping it under the rug. If someone decides to jump of a bridge, then a 'suicide' helmet would hardly matter.

And I thought I had a substance abuse problem...

OMFG, I don't think you realize how deep that is!

And I thought I had a substance abuse problem...
well, the only thing that are abused ... are my ears ... you have no idea how noisy my neighbor are ... (although i would not want to kill them for that much anyway ... )

i swear ... it's been years that i am off the stuff ... promise!!!
