The German hardware site K-Hardware has unveiled the minumum and recommended requirements for Futuremark's next gen 3DMark 2008. Unfortunately, there's no additional information, only specs this time, no release date either.

Minimum Requirements:
  • X86 compatible single core CPU with SSE2 support and a performance, which are comparable with a Pentium D 3,2 GHz+.
  • DirectX 10 compatible with 256 MB memory
  • 1024MB Memory
  • 2GB of free fixed disks
  • Windows Vista

Recommended Specs:
  • Intel core 2 Duo E6600 or comparable AMD CPU
  • DirectX 10 compatible with 512 MB memory
  • 2048MB Memory
  • 2GB of free fixed disks
  • Windows Vista

So it has to be dx10 huh... Thought as much.

What about all these setups with X1950's etc..... Surely they are going to release a DX9 version of it????

I hope they bring out some new tests too and not just the same ones at a higher res...

:toast: to futermark though for a kickass benchin app..

quite some recommended specs...

looks like another vista only benchmark :(

Haha it does say it requires Windows Vista, so I would assume it's Vista only. :o

I'm willing to bet at least most of the tests will be new based on the DX10/Vista thing, but mostly because they skipped 07
they had new from 01-03 then new from 03-05 but some similar from 05-06

Oh dear.... I was just about to say I can hear the complaints already :D!
Seriously though guys can you not understand that the industry moves on??? It's very simple to understand really, 3dmark has always been about moving forward (remember when 06 came out and people with X800s couldn't use it because of SM3 support - 9.0c). I for one am very happy about this news as it means that the industry is in fact moving on and should hopefully increase adoption of DX10 and Vista. Both of which are fantastic technologies.
:toast:

PS I am being serious

I totally agree, doesn't mean I'm happy about it though :p

this bench app will lose many people which still relying on WinXP for their Pc though
moving forward is OK, but hey, even microsoft is about to release SP3 for WinXP....
if this bench will release in 2010 (EoL of WinXP), then it's OK. but 2008? i don't think it will attract more people to use it than 05/06

i luv too see my score drop about 6000 points hope its out soon

run 06. its not like people want to run a geforce FX on 3dmark 06.

Basically, 05 was a DX9 test too, but with poor CPU (dual/quad) support. 06 added a far better CPU test, and improved the testing so that it was harder for Video companies to cheat in, and now 08 is for DX10/vista only.

its not like 05 and 06 are no longer valid tests, just because a new ones out.

Step in the wrong direction IMO. CPU tests shouldn't be anything visual, video tests should be high res high settings, and at multiple settings. That would give a much better comparison. A game test of 1280x1024 2xaa 4xaf, high res test of 1600x1200 4xaa 8xaf, low res of 640x480 no aa/af. Then a couple cpu based tests. That would give a much better comparison.

As it stands currently CPU score is dependent on the video card, ram performance isn't measured. Some tests are CPU bound and therefore adversly affect the video score.

All of you crybabies can still use 3Dmark 06 to benchmark your OLD pcs.

This benchmark is specifically designed to test NEW hardware and software. If you're not satisfied, why don't you spend a year developing FREE software that works on both Vista and XP....

I have an x800 in this rig, and I can run it, and submit my scores, they are just hampered by the fact that I don't have SM3 scores added to my final score.

The benchmark is not designed to measure older card performance since that is well known. It is meant to be a predictor of future game feature support for the latest game engines. That means DX10 which in turn requires Vista. Not a real biggie. DX10 finally comes in the mainstream.

I agree. Somehow I have the feeling that 06 will be the premier bench app loooooong after XP is at its EOL stage through 2010. We have a trend of hanging onto something long after its gone, and thats not to say its a bad thing. But we'll all eventually realize it.

The recommended is a little too high if you ask me. I mean, its a benchmarking program, and they should remember that. Setting the bar so high means, unless you vary the OC in it, its pretty much gonna wrangle up the same way...

Theres already enough benchmark proggies for xp.the next logical step is a vista/dx10 proggie.

The recommended specs are not that high, most of us on here have specs similar to or higher than them.

comes is a weak word in this case, its more like forced ...

WTF do you mean by Forced DX10 on us? That's like saying Sony is forcing us to buy a PS3 to play MGS4, nintendo is forcing us to buy a wii to play Brawl, etc... I don't know about you, but I always am and always have been open to new and advanced graphical elements.

Nobody is FORCING you to buy current hardware/software. This program is free. If you don't want to upgrade to DX10, then stay with XP, and use 3Dmark 06.

whats up with you? it is Forced you could use 2.0SM cards on 06 and the 4.0SM on 06 but you only can use a 4.0SM card to run 08 thats fucked up, who cares theres alot for XP you should at least be able to use it just with out the 4.0SM thats what I think

I really can't see why people are so confused as to why this is vista/dx10/etc only.

The idea of 3dmark is it tests your pc with latest technologies... seens as dx10 is vista only that explains why its vista only and they couldn't release a dx9 version because the results between the dx9 and dx10 versions would be inconsistent due to the different technologies used, basically the dx9 version would be easier to do.

Yup cause it's a DX10 bench! :D And there will not be a DX9 version, because thats what 2006 is for! Problem is.....I've got DX10 but I aint got Vista

same comment

now if DX10 was in XP....I would be that it would be for XP as well.

I agree but not saying it was right but when 2006 came out all that time ago (well it seems like it) I kinda thought  shit 1Gig ram minimum and at least a Gfx card with 256MB GDDR......at the time I had 512MB ram and a 6800 vanilla 128MB.......it was frightening!

Every aspect you can imagine of WinXP has been tested already, theres nothing more to test in WinXP. So now its time for Vista.

And for those that going to throw in stupid comment about SP3 for XP, you need to understand that SP3 is mostly to improve security and fix bugs. It has nothing to do with Gaming performance.
