Elon Musk Announces that Twitter Will Change Name to X

X usually is symbol on button for close/turn off
I wish Elon to concentrate his mind and actions much more in the space related hardware because Mars is so close.
And yet so far away. There are realities that still make Mars a pipe dream. Greater than how we are going to get there.

I guess it was too hard to change everything at once...

Linda sounds like AI.

X....

As in canceled?

That sounds stupid. I think twitter/facebook/instagram or whatever all these social platforms are stupid to begin with, but literally changing the name from Twitter to X is really dumb.

I know companies can spend a lot of money on people to "re-invent" their logos/image/color scheme/slogan and so on, but I'm guessing Musk got tired of signing a bunch of paperwork and just started to use "X" to make his mark (like you see in the movies where someone has to sign a contract, but they can't actually write so they're just asked to make their mark and they use an "X") and thought it would be a good idea to rename Twitter to X.

Twitter was broken.
It was broken before Elon, it was a money shredding machine.
It got more broken after Elon, most of the advertisers left, and they don't want to come back to Twitter. It's toxic.
You can't put a new coat of pain on a turd, Elon is trying to transform it. It is the only move he could do. Not a smart move or a dumb move, the only move.
A lot has to change to make that think profitable and that's the only thing that matters to him.
I totally agree. Changing the logo will do nothing. If anything it will alienate and confuse, however, hardened Twits will continue with the endless bickering and trolling.
Nothing will change which is why I avoid it and only login to complain to certain support accounts that don't allow you to complain via any other channel.
X-Moan is what it really should be called.

Hopefully, the "X" will mark the spot....

for my uber-high explosive 155mm Howitzer to hone in on and obliterate for all time :)

Had a twitter for about an hour for a county treasure hunt event. This won't get me back. X censors too much. Again, if it's on the app store, it ain't free speech. Gab is inevitable.

The only social network thing i frequently use is reddit, it's by far the less toxic, less obnoxious and the most useful.

I think the questions you all have are easy to anwser.
  1. Why do it?
They have to do something, anything. There isn't a CEO in the world that would sit on his a** while the company is dying by bits. They'll try anything and rebranding is one the the few choices Twitter has left. Plus rebranding works.
  2. Why X?
Because Elon already owns the necessary domains, trademarks, etc. Rebranding usually takes months or years of preparation because you have to secure the new brand against anything anyone can throw at you. A lot of companies have died because they became boggled in lawsuits over their brand.
  3. Why now?
Easiest one to answer. They're bleeding and the smell has attracted a lot of sharks, most small, some huge like Threads, none harmless. They can't wait or they'll bleed to death and the others have already taken a big chunk of their userbase. Whatever they do it has to be done right now.
It all comes down to time: they don't have much so they have to do everything they can while they still can or risk going the way of MySpace.

ts the only avenue he has left, charge forward because the facts are catching up to him fast.

Train crash in slow motion I love it. Starship is going to be a similar fiasco I reckon.
Don't matter who owns it, social media is trash and only the dumb follow.
I've never been able to find any value in Twitter, as far as I'm concerned removing that cesspool of spam is a useful service, but it seems like he's going to build a bigger one.
I agree wholeheartedly about the demise of twitter, couldn't care less about such a toxic and terrible platform and user base (in my opinion), more than happy to slowly watch it die, and snack on some popcorn along the way. My only reservations are the 'innocent' people impacted along the way, laid off employees, stressed out employees, some of the utterly mind boggling god complex bs flow on effects it has had on people just trying to earn a wage. There are / were plenty of average joe office workers that got f**cked along the way.

That makes two.. indeed

You think? He is lightyears away from travelling there still. SpaceX has feature parity with a space shuttle from decades ago by now, and added a bit of recycling to the process. Yay? Because that is realistically what weve got now if you cut away all the promises. He can land a rocket back on earth. Its an achievement but gets us nowhere plus we have more space debris up there now than ever. Fabulous!
More like 15.85 light minutes from Earth to Mars.

X is the future state of unlimited interactivity - centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking - creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we're just beginning to imagine.
It will also make coffee, educate your children and achieve world peace. But for now it allows you to send 280 character messages.
It will still be powered by electricity, but for anyone to read anything in 2023 it has to contain the buzzword AI.
we're just beginning to imagine
Translation: they have no clue what they want to do with it at this point.

Can only think about that DMX song: "X gon' give it to ya".
Yeah its meme material now, kinda ironic for this medium lmao

They are basicaly wanting the non-chinese equivelant of WeChat. WHy even buy twitter if you're just going to make your own thing?
Userbase! Its not the technology, its the herd mentality Musk paid 44 whoppin billion for

and it evaporates faster than we can blink x_x

For some unknown reason to me it's market cap is 41B, so it isn't that bad. It's also not very far from the peak (53$ to 77$)
And it bleeds money and advertisers, imagine if it didn't.

The messaging from the press statement is very conflicting. "X" suggests that he wants to cancel/kill Twitter. On the other side they basically say they want to turn Twitter into a US version of the Chinese "WeChat", the multitool for everything. But my gut tells me he wants to turn it into ElonTweet where he can spread his (algorithm pushed) goodly gospel to his worshippers. He just has the vibes.

Don't matter who owns it, social media is trash and only the dumb follow.

It's not social media in general, the problem with Twitter was it's small character limit, which just attracted low IQ folks. There was no space for real debate, it was basically just screaming into the corporate/influencer hallway from your little door.

A lot of gory photos and videos are posted on Twitter, for example from the war in Ukraine, which should not be visible to the public, but the technology has gaps. Apparently it is allowed, for the purpose of propaganda. It is freely visible in quoted twitter posts, in some forums, so they are visible to people with health problems and others who find the sight unbearable, and it is also visible to children.
And yes especially twitter is trash I support opinion of @AsRock. Elon must make right decision how to rule his property in future.

It's even wilder on reddit. But that's something typical USAmerican. A pile of decomposing human bodies is totally fine for minors, but dare you not hiding every nipple behind a registration wall. Perfect example why Murica is such a joke to the rest of the world. Tbh. it's something important for the world to see if you want change, but you gotta limit access to it.

The only social network thing i frequently use is reddit, it's by far the less toxic, less obnoxious and the most useful.

They also got a great sense of humor & sarcasm. Just a different audience over there, very enjoyable. Also if you Google something you'll always find something useful on reddit.

I use twitter to contact my ISP the quickest way.
It does indeed have that benefit, companies tend to treat email support as gutter level, can be weeks if even get a response, phone tends to have poorly trained bods, but because twitter is out in the open more effort is made, and is now usually the best support channel. I have come across 'some' companies in the UK that can only be contacted via social media. (facebook/twitter)

Soon we can all order tickets to mars via X....... :D

To me, the description in the article sounds like he is wanting to build an evolution of WeChat that would be used outside of China.

edit--
They are basicaly wanting the non-Chinese equivalent of WeChat. Why even buy twitter if you're just going to make your own thing?
Didn't see this before posting.
My opinion on the reason is that Twitter already has a massive infrastructure in place with a user base of hundreds of millions. Humans do not like change and disruption, I have to imagine that it would be exceptionally difficult to convince that many people to switch over to a brand new and unproven platform that is trying to integrate every single aspect of their day to day life. Instead, he is now starting off with a half billion installed dopamine addicts.

We european are going to love it under the patriot act. This is what we do.

Some folks needs to use it for reaching an audience. I do, even though I'm shit at it. In that sense, I'd be dumb not to use it. Not Twitter mind, even before Musk, it was a nest of nasty.

Though I'm in agreeance with most here, social media is just crap. It's fine if you're on a sub-group about cars, guns, books, nature, whatever (liked minded-folks discussing what things they enjoy). But selling it as a general 'town hall' nonsense - no way. You ask a million people what they think of 'topic A' and all you get is fighting and bitching, trolling and tears. There's no debate on an open social media channel. There is no town hall. Just carnage.
Going by the town hall analogy, and seeing the kind of content that gets promoted by "algorithms" ... well yes, it's a town hall, and you can get a job as a security guard there only if you're willing to pick fights all the time.

If there's anyone left in the Marketing Dept over there, please, please, please use DMX for the campaign.

You're aware you just called a lot of people here dumb, right?
He is.

He could've... not bought a turd.

Maybe X is where you pay to go and cancel all decorum in society?
