ATI Radeon HD 2900 GT Pictured

NVIDIA won't be the only graphics card manufacturer to introduce a new GT this month. ATI is also shipping its HD 2900 GT video cards. The new cards are using different PCB with only one 8-pin power connector and 256MB/256bit GDDR3 memory. No information available on core and memory clock speeds. Price in Thailand should be around $195.

Update: core/memory speeds are 600MHz and 800MHz respectively.

Wonder why they decided on one 8-pin pci-e plug...that's kind of odd imo. I wonder how well these will clock using the stock cooler in comparison to Pro's/XT's. Could be a good buy if the price point is right. Interesting find Malware.

The list price is 200$ for the 512MB version.
But the 256MB version, which is directly comparable to this card, should be 200$ or less.
So, it the 8800 GT would actually be somewhat cheaper than this.

I just wonder what nVidia is thinking of doing with the 8800 GTX/Ultra now that the 8800 GT is out.

They don't have to do anything. As long as the newer GTS doesn't outperform it, then they'll probably forego making a revised version.

IMO, nowadays, 256MB is just too small ammount of mem to put your money into it. :/ We can see 320MB cards struggling hard with little higher resolutions/detail in newer products. What is the point?

I can order this card in Canada for $179CAD so that price quoted is definitely higher than it should be.

Now if HD 3800 series would be aimed in that cap, this would just be a real silly card, so they have to be faster. HD 3850 might be close to HD 2900 XT speed and HD 3870 over it and compeate with 8800 GT.

No surprise given it beats out every other Nvidia card, save the GTX and Ultra, but even then, it wins some benches and goes nose to nose and toe to toe with it. This is the card Nvidia wanted from the get go, and a card, that I as an AMD/ATI fanboy, want ATI to produce <G>

Might want to re-check that...
The 2900xt beats the 8800GTS 640 in most cases, and in benchmarks holds the top 5 world records still, over the 8800Ultras..

You are getting so close here that its all application dependent.
PS- I would LOVE to see an 8800GT perform on par with a 2900XT in say 1920x1200...

IIRC, something about ATi architecture somewhat 'limits' their cards to either 256 or 512MB - not saying their cards couldn't handle more, but that they perform and utilize these memory sizes best - at least, when compared to nVs 320 and 640 setups. We can see on-par or better performance, plus better visuals, at lower clock speeds and with less memory on ATi cards.


I'm glad to see ATI expanding their HD2ks lineup so quickly, though.

Eh, I have thought about getting 2 of them.... But I am still waiting, hopefully something will come out I can actually look at and go hmm ya that looks good...
