I bought an acer aspire 575
The previous owner says the battery worked fine for abour an hour and a half before he stopped using it for year, then sold it to me just now, the system works fine but it doesnt detect the battery (says theres none plugged in) i installed a new OS, installed battery drivers and it persists, i know batteries die if you dont plug them on after a long time i just wanted to know if theres any method to "revive" it or fully drain it so maybe it comes back to life (ive had laptops with "dead" batteries come to life by just charging the laptop while powered off), when the laptop is off and i plug the charger a orange light turns on for about 30 seconds before turning off, the BIOS has no battery settings or information. i just unplugged the battery altogether hoping it would fully drain and maybe plugging it back will work somehow, just wanted to know any tips for lion laptop battery recovery, thanks!!

Hi,
Best way to fix it is replace the battery or return to person that you bought it from for refund
I'd lean towards the 2nd hehe

unplug power, remove the battery, press power button for +10s, insert battery,
plug power back in AND DO NOTHING ELSE, leave plugged in overnight.

but i doubt it will help, usually only works with batts that still have some juice.

Li based stuff dies from low charge state, so never leave it in the device if removable (charge to 70% before storage),
or make sure it gets charged to ~65% every couple of weeks.
depending on location, you can get them pretty cheap in some office/electronic shops,
make to sure to have about 60-70% charge before removing it, when the laptop wont get used for a while.

Hi,
Yeah I have a ups that sat unused for 11 months
Plugged it in and it said the battery was still at 100%
Unplugged it with normal load pc/ monitor and it died in about 2 minutes lol

Let it charge 36 hours+- and did it again and it showed 45 minute at that load.
I was about to trash it hehe but not so much now

@ThrashZone
more or less same thing, unplug batt for +2 month of non use.

but those, from some exceptions, are usually sealed lead based "starter" typ batteries,
e.g. dont like to be discharged (at all, as in below 95%), so turning off the equipment when there's a power outage, is the best to keep them working for years.
check a local autozone, most ups use batt with specs/connectors matching small bike/sport stuff batteries they carry,
maybe get an agm version, they tend to last a bit longer. and are a bit "safer" against leakage due to any form of "mistreatment" (charge state/damage).

Depending on how low charge the cells have gone it may not be revivable by the laptop as they usually expect a certain threshold of voltage to "detect" the battery. If they are below that then there is nothing the laptop could do.

People at this point would throw a Lithium battery on a dumb charger that is current limited for a short period of time to try and raise the voltage up to that threshold then use a proper lithium charger (aka the laptop) to then take over.

However it may be beyond quite a few people and it always carries a risk of failure which with lithium isnt something to take lightly.

Hi,
This is the most disturbing part and why would you buy this item knowing the battery was this bad ?

Yes. A Li-ion battery is considered bad, and unsafe for further charging, when the voltage drops below a certain limit (2.9 V per cell, I think, but that may also depend on the chemistry). So a proper BMS shouldn't allow charging in this state. I too would try to charge with a dumb charger but just as an experiment, not to try to revive the cells.

even if it works, it wont magically have decent capacity for use past a brownout, so..
dont use, or replace.

nothing like it can run for 1 hour and something then the next day it just died
the worst scenario that accepted is the battery last for 30 minutes before off
i guess you have bad battery and the previous owner didn't tell you and the best one is just buy a new battery

It's common with old laptops. I have a 2021 Dell laptop that I hadn't used for an extended period of time (~6 mo's - I had been home plenty at the time, and also had a girlfriend at the time so I was tinkering a lot less with my PC's) and the battery's health took a huge plunge. It's been getting better with further cycles, as it's not really old, but it's clearly nowhere near what a 3 year old battery with less than 50 cycles on it should be experiencing.

The advice to fully discharge, and then leave it charging for a full day or so, repeat a couple of times, is sound, but it looks like your battery is way past that. Replace if possible.

Sounds just like how NiCad batteries die, LOL. NiCads, which were usually used in R/C cars, were notorious for dying, when I just turn my head the other way! They were known for poor stamina!

Now, about Li ion batteries, I dunno. Especially this case of the battery not being detected. (or shadow-banned by firmware, where it absolutely refuses to try again with charging, no matter what)

The guy probably left it at low charge for too long. If that is the case, chances are pretty good the battery is toast.

Ty all bois! Your answers are amazing! The battery is dirty cheap (38 bucks) and i got the laptop for like 60 with 6th gen core i7 so its not a big deal, its more about learning how batteries work and you all gave me great insight thanks!!

no problem.

makes sure to never charge above 90% or drop below 30%
keep between 50-80% if possible, they "like" cycles more,
than the stress from the last 10-20% (on each end of scale).

G15 5515 Ryzen Edition, gaming laptop
at least the official batteries are way cheaper then for my lenovo laptops. I paid almost 200USD+45 shipping for a replacement for my W530 a few years ago... :( that was the last time I bought a laptop battery...

Yep, they aren't very expensive. Mine has the small 56Wh battery. When I get around replacing it I'll get the 86Wh pack and 64 GB RAM. It'll be great. Wonder if I can find a compatible 144 Hz+ panel as well.

are you located in the US?
besides MC, walmart and staples are usually the ones with decent stock they can get to the store within couple of days
without you paying for shipping, and while not for all, most batteries are on the lower side of prices.
