Capcom Updates Resident Evil Mobile Ports To Require Internet Connection

Perhaps you recently tried booting up the mobile versions of the Resident Evil 4, 7 and Village and discovered something surprising, you needed an internet connection. Simply put, you're not the only one. The reason why it was probably surprising is that it's really rare for single player games to require internet connection. If we're talking about mobile games in general, then it would be very common for an internet connection to be required, but not for a single player game like Resident Evil.

After Capcom's recent update to the Resident Evil 4, 7, and village on IOS, Capcom dropped an update note for each of the games, stating: "Due to changes to the startup process, an internet connection is now required when starting this app." Now, this is somewhat strange considering the fact that it would be odd for Resident Evil, being a single player game, would need the internet connection for data collection or DRM checks, as some suggest on Reddit. And would be strange because, there are lots of mobile games like Resident Evil in mobile game stores, and they don't require being connected to the internet like Resident Evil.

A number of players on Reddit requested a refund due to the update, but there would probably not be many people considering the amount of gamers who bought this game. In July, according to VG247, App Magic stated that there were around 2000 units, of the IOS version of Resident Evil 7, sold. It wouldn't hurt to mention that this amount of sales was notably under 2000 sold units and not above it. Although it's pure speculation, I think that, considering the fact that the cost of the Resident Evil games on mobile is worth as much as the console, it affected the sales performance negatively.

I simply can't understand the requirement of an internet connection for a single player game, no matter the platform.

How else are they going to scrape data and sell it?

Protection against pirates and illegal copies of the game.

What time is it? It's REVIEW BOMBING TIME!!! :p

I'm guessing Capcom's gonna experience what other publishers did when they f*cked up.

F**k off capcom, that is all.

Protection against pirates and illegal copies of the game.
Yeah, as that's totally stopped piracy on PC. Oh hey wait...

This may be DRM, it may also be collecting data to get the games to run better. If you haven't played either of these games on an iPhone 15 Pro, they run like garbage and really not worth buying on that platform.

First time I am hearing of a company going out their way to add an always online requirement to a game that didn't have it before, amazing.

Didn't these games sell poorly, what the hell do they even care, there is virtually no piracy on iOS.

^^THIS^^

as well as tracking where, when, on what device & how you play :(

In this case - it’s on iOS. It’s already heavily protected just by the AppStore. Sure, jailbreaks and app sideloading is technically possible on iOS, but it’s such a load of bother that even for a second pretending that this measure is to “combat piracy” is a non-starter.
As already mentioned - this is data scraping. Capcom already does this on PC, I think people should take a look at the agreement their games throw in your face in the menu the first time you launch them - it’s quite amusing.

Exactly. Personally I haven't had a jailbroken iPhone since the 3GS.

Requiring an internet connection for a game like this is stupid, even more ridiculous for a mobile device.

sadly capcom are dumb and this is already been cracked
./thread

adding a internet connection check AFTER your game has already been cracked is like closing the barn door after the horses are gone

Oh look it's me just sailin' the high seas. Thought I'd left such a life behind but I guess it wasn't to be.

Yeah. Though I guess they'll update that later to support offline since I doubt that they'll keep the servers up forever...
