Software XP Home SP2, can't wait for Vista SP1.
We've been hearing about the latest service packs from Microsoft for some time, but until recently, there have been no mentions as to how either performs. An independent researcher took test versions of both Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3 and pitted them against each other. What he found was astounding, to say the least. Vista SP1 at most points was no faster than the release version, and in some cases was twice as slow. However, XP SP3 was able to claim a very hefty performance boost from Vista SP1, and even XP SP2. If the beta performance carries over to the final versions, Microsoft will be making quite a pretty penny off of XP SP3, considering the massive performance gains seen at this time. Have a look at this very telling benchmark chart (Officebench, in seconds, less time is better).

What did they think. Lets Start Dos shows ultimate performance gains against Windows Vista sp1:laugh:

Wow it opens like few second faster with XP SP3 over 2, is this suppose to be impressive?

Unless I see some other benchmarks this means nothing!

Finally XP will (hopefully) be as fast as a damn 32-bit OS should be!

OMG, thats a horrible chart! Does it really take 90 yawns for Vista to start!

Riddle me this:

When is an upgrade a downgrade?

And when is a downgrade an upgrade?

(I think you can answer than one for yourselves! ;))

Exactly Lemonadesoda! When can I expect to download this SP3?

I'm not impressed by just this as proof, I know XP is currently faster in some respects to Vista, but to me this one graph proves useless until more "real-world" testing by "real users" has been posted and verified. I think it's great that XP is getting SP3, I've used XP since 2001, and have had many trials and errors with it along with knowing how to make it how I want to. But on the other hand, I am still hoping MS can wave some magic programming wand over Vista's SP1 and make it faster and at least a little better in some areas.

Sure, I may be messing w/Vista atm, but I still get the feeling that it's ME 2 on many occasions, but it has gotten better since I gave up on it back in summer, so to me there's hope. And maybe we should all just wait for Windows 7 (blackcomb or whatever they're calling it now) and see what that brings.

In the end I'd like to see some more results from both patches that doesn't show the OfficeBench. And I hope sooner than later we can all get whatever SP for the currently installed OS and see what real world differences they make. Time will tell, I'm hoping both OS's benefit greatly from these service packs...I mean atm Vista is the way for DX10 gaming, which after so much hype and so many 8800's/2900's sold, is starting to make some headway.

Yes, when can we download? You know, like..legally of course..and stuff. Oh boy...*looks guilty*. Look over there! A bear! *runs away*

it doesn't seem that long to start vista for me.. Or could it be the simple fact that I'm duel booting? anyway, looking forward to SP3... and the bear told me to let you know the next time you see something use the penguin... he's easier to notice

Whoa.. that's an astonishing difference... finally Windows XP will be as expected. FAST!:)

I assume it is Vista 32 bit and how well is it tuned? I found no real difference going from XP to Vista, but, of course I am on Vista 64. It may be a tad slower in some games, but we are talking about 1 or 2 fps at most. And, XP has always been faster than Vista, no surpirse their. It is a older OS with very mature drivers. Remember when XP was launched? Everyone was saying to avoid it and stick with Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Once the drivers come around, things change.

Wow... microsoft shot themselves in the foot.

So Vista SP1 turns out to be SLOWER than VISTA without the Service Pack. The hell is up with that?

I think vista is "ME" all over again.

Can we expect performance boosts in *most* programs or just simpler things?

i reckon this could be a vista bashing

I don't reckon, I know.

Vista is actually decent. Just don't bash it. XP was bashed and then... it's not that bad!

This is true, if you plan on throwing rocks don't live in glass houses. Truth be told, I found nothing tangible about Vista that warrants me to keep it over XP. I have both and I cannot find 1 reason to say Vista is better then XP. Once SP3 is released we will find out the truth behind all this. But I already have a feeling some will be extremely upset if performance is improved with SP3. We shall see :D

I've got the option to go ahead and upgrade to Vista . . . but I'm kinda waiting on SP1 before I give it a trial run. My father hasn't noticed too much of a difference in performance . . . he's been very frustrated, though, with trying to figure out where everything is buried in Vista.

i was saying this report could be anti vista

I wouldn't assume that just yet lets wait until it's release and see what the final results are. It's possible the results are accurate according for that person's setup we really don't know right now. There's no reason to suggest it's anti vista simply because XP widen's the gap with SP3. Again, wait until the SP3 is released and reviewed :toast:

indeed we shall

How stupid.. if MS wernt aware of this they are now, so will deliberately hamper SP3 in some way so its no faster or slower than Vista. The guy who decided to release this info prior to SP3 being final is a moron.

this chart means nothing. i wanna know how they went about testing it.
