Athena Worlds, a video games studio founded by video games veterans of titles such as Alien Vs Predator, Forza Horizon, Goldeneye N64, The Sims, Microsoft Flight Simulator and a slew of chart-topping games are proud to announce "Xenomorph."

Alien Vs Predator for Atari, defined Jane Whittaker's career. It also defined a genre, often regarded as the first true survival game, with over 100 awards and recently honored with number 3 in the top 10 scariest games of all-time awards. It spawned an enduring franchise. AvP for the Atari Jaguar was programmed by Mike Beaton (3D engine / gameplay designer) and Jane (AI and gameplay programmer/designer) and produced by James Purple Hampton. It is no exaggeration to say this cult classic changed the face of gaming.

Athena Worlds can now announce that Jane and the Athena team have embarked on a spiritual sequel to AvP.

"It is a very personal journey for me", said Jane Whittaker, CEO of Athena Worlds, "So many people still talk about our work on AvP to this day, with a massive following. I have been asked for over 30 years to create my next survival and stealth strategy game. I am beyond thrilled to say that thanks to generous support my day has come."

After crash landing on planet XL-243 you quickly find you are not alone and the battle for survival begins. Bringing together Jane's 40 years' experience of trademark character AI, crafting, resource management and stealth coupled with a renown for making gamers jump out of their chair at every corner (AvP players will confirm this!), Xenomorph is aimed at being a landmark open world game of exploration, survival, high stakes tension and combat.

Athena Worlds have brought together the perfect team to create the personal sequel people having been asking Jane to create for over 30 years. Production is being led by Mike Meaden (producer Star Citizen, Squadron 42 and Forza Horizon), with character design led by Blizzard scholarship award winner Blaire Wathen.

In space no one can hear you scream. On XL-243 everyone can hear you scream!

AVAILABILITY: In Development, for PC, Xbox, PlayStation 5

It is almost always a bad omen when a game comes out saying It wants to be a spiritual successor to another popular game publicly. I still remember what happened with Back 4 Blood...

I hope they can deliver, but I am not gonna be holding my breath.

-Not sure it's that bad an omen. As a counter example, Bioshock was a spiritual successor to System Shock and that game/series is better known than the original now.

I've played all the AvP games and the only one that I could honestly say was really good was Monolith's (peace be upon them) AvP2. Both of Rebellion's games were barely passable, and the ancient Jaguar game doesn't even enter the conversation.

So it's a series that is already starting in the hole a bit (as AvP does) so we'll see where this goes...

Generally what ends up happening is that they try copying the game they based themselves off too closely and then 'change' it in one or few more major ways to try and make it feel different, and that's why most of them end up crashing and burning. They don't take any real inspiration, they just want to be the next version of that game in modern times (when the game released), that's why Back4Blood burned ot the ground and Bioshock succeeded. Bioshock didn't try to be System Shock, but it certainly was very inspired by it. (and in some cases mirrored it in ways that were positive. It's a balancing act.)

Does this mean that you cant tell some very obvious System Shock inspirations in Bioshock? No, you can definitely see them if you have a eye for them. But that's the thing. It isn't obvious. The game didn't let it self be consumed by its inspiration and be a worse game for it. It's a TRUE spiritual SUCCESSOR. Where as back4blood did not succeed any more than its predecessor (it actually succeeded far less.)

I guess its just a matter of perspective though, and philosophy I guess. I dunno. Not saying the game is cursed for failure, but I just don't feel confident about it.

AvP2 was pretty sweet as far as I remember but I've only played it once a long time ago.. I was never really into the Alien or Predator franchises.

Give me a new AvP boomer shooter with 90s visuals.

Not exactly on topic, and about the game itself. But... but... IMHO, the spiritual, successor of "Aliens" already exist (much superior TBH), and they are- "Genestealers"

No. Predators aren't good at that. What's the point of invisibility? Also Aliens, what's the point of being sneaky in a boomer shooter? Sure have some marines in it, but they are like the least interesting thing in an Alien vs Predator thing. Make the Marine campaign a boomer shooter, sure whatever. No one cares about marines, they suck and are boring.

I mean, if it's backed by the same talent that brought us The Sims, it's gonna be awesome. Right? :P

What exactly is a boomer shooter? I thought they were like Serious Sam style shooters. AvP is definitely not that.
