Why would anyone pick this over the 500 Hz QD-OLED?
Extremely serious esports players I guess.
During my research in my OLED purchase decision, I found a Chinese guy in Chiphell and bilibili who (in summary, IIRC) have used a few 360Hz OLEDs in high level FPS games and found something off for him. (unrelated to resolution, and more likely something timing-related between GPU and the display thing, but I don't completely understand). He performs much better in TN. Yes really.
The last time I check he does use OLED for non-FPS usage, and a super-high-speed TN when ships get serious.

I can't really engage any further because I don't know better, just to say there was such a guy.

I treat these TN stuff as an oldies tech which normies should never get anywhere close to them, and frankly normies probably will never understand why TN is still a thing.

What a facepalm product.

Concentrated snake oil. All of these "competitive players" are ambasaddors of that shite.

He has shown enough in his video to convince some that is not snake oil, but I don't have much more to show in English.
And he is a monitor reviewer with some esports background. He did some serious tests with expensive equipment in a bit different way than, say, RTINGS and Monitors Unboxed, to get there.

To be clear, no matter what those professional shooter players say, this, or TN in general, is still a product category that no sane person besides actual professional shooter players should consider.
TN are pretty much industrial waste if not for shooters. He did add similar disclaimer in his videos.

And actual esports player community won't care this forum enough to leave comment about that.

What drawbacks does OLED have compared to TN?

Because the drawbacks of OLED outweigh the positives?
What drawbacks?

OLED has some visual artifacting for Variable Refresh Rate (as per Rtings) but at 500 Hz you don't need VRR you can just disable it. OLED burn in is practically a non-issue in 2025.

Contrast, brightness, colour accuracy, colour volume, response time, viewing angle - all parameters are better for OLED.

If i go OLED i have to:
  • Set desktop to a black wallpaper.
  • Set taskbar to auto hide.
  • Remove all desktop ahortcuts.
  • Leave powerbrick on 24/7 due to pixel refresh feature.
  • Use dark themes everywhere.
  • Can't do text editing work on it.
  • Limit my playtime due to static HUD elements.
Too many drawbacks to outweigh the postives which is only the real blacks.

And even if you do all that, you still got this burn-in person breathing in your neck constantly, there is simply no peace of mind, just like watercooling.

Which drawbacks? I personally haven't seen a single drawback in having an OLED monitor other than the absolute rubbish about "it's gonna burn in!!111" like it's the end of the world. Same people who swore up down left right b a that SSDs were highly unsafe and should be shunned to the end of days, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Paranoia unfounded in reality

VRR is nice at any resolution or refresh rate. Wonder what would be the bespoke visual artifacting, since sample and hold blur should be imperceptible at such a tremendously fast refresh rate. At least to most people, anyway. I barely notice it on my 120Hz OLED

Agreed, although, if it's substantially cheaper than a 500Hz OLED (and I'm guessing, it's not), I guess it's passable for some people. Wouldn't take that deal, though.

What the titfuck?
Whatever you take I want a line of that. Or maybe not...

They say it affects dark scenes more than light scenes.

Oh flickering. Yuuup. I've got some scenarios where it's pretty bad. I've a surefire way to get it to flicker like mad, using Bitwarden for some reason. Just move the mouse rapidly within the app. Disabling VRR could work around that, in theory. Unsure about the potential tearing at such high frame rates though. I guess it's worth a try.

He should try to use a CRT then, if he is that sensitive ;)
