CEO Admits AMD 'Bungled' Barcelona Launch

AMD CEO Dirk Meyer had something to say to the press today, and it was something along the lines of bungling (I love that word) the Barcelona launch. As The Inquirer so eloquently puts it, Barcelona "was hyped as the best thing since nylon stockings. In the end it was launched six months late, failed to work then, and is now adrift on high seas, apparently following its arch-competitor's Itanic on a trip to Laughing Stock Island." As far as an official statement goes, Dirk Meyer had this to say regarding Barcelona:

We haven't delivered our quad core product according to plan. We'll make good on our promise to deliver hundreds of thousands of quad core processors, but we're disappointed. We blew it, and we're very humbled by it. And we learned from it, and we're not going to do it again.

If AMD's financial records continue their abysmal performance, and the stock continues sinking below the four-year low it currently is at, AMD may not have too many more chances to redeem their reputation.

its bizzare looking back on amds history, the times they were ahead of intel, and the times they have been the underdogs of the processor market. its seems to me that they arent recovering from their latest aquisitions and product releases, its unfortunate, i respect their honesty and at the same time i am discouraged (like probably many) from buying their products until they can release stable & successfull line of quality processors (again, if they can), some of you may argue with me about them being 'on the brink' time will show if they can survive or not, glad i didnt get on the amd quad core bandwagon.

Hey it took AMD 6 months to admit that they were having a problem with Barcelona dont go dissing Microsoft just because of their long denial of there being a Red ring of death issue. at least they also admitted to it EVENTUALLY

not really an AMD fan, but I'm ATI loyal, so . . .

i still don't want to see AMD go down, though. At least they were willing to say their product was bunked before anyone else did . . . it won't get out of proportion that way.


Intel has had their fair share, too . . . actually, quite a few more tanked CPU's than AMD ever has . . . sadly, Intel doesn't want to admit when a product is tripe - look at the Itanics . . . how many years ago were those boats launched, and how long did it take for people to bail ship?

and to think, just a month or two ago . . . Intel launched the 2nd generation Itanics!! What's that mam used to say? Quiters never prosper?

I like this. As was said though, the next revision should fix the majority of problems and complaints. I look forward to those chips and the price slash ::drool::
