ATI reportedly aims to release its next-generation R700-series GPUs in mid-2008. The news comes as a surprise, as earlier it was revealed that the ATI R700-series chips are only due either in late 2008 or early in 2009.

According to a news story by the Chinese newspaper Commercial Times, ATI's RV770 GPU is due to be commercially released in late Q2 2008. Two of such chips are projected to power AMD's new high-performance ATI R700 graphics card.

AMD has already released samples of the 55nm RV770 GPU to its partners for certification and cards are expected to launch at late second quarter, added the paper.

So, what was that about slides proving that R700 for a 2009 release?

Great news from AMD! Something we dont get enough of. Personally, I am more than satisfied with my HD3870 and expect to see some great things from R700. Even if its not more powerful than Nvidia's 9000 series, I dont have 500+ to spend on a new card anyway.

Mid-08? Here I was thinking it was going to be a lot later, but considering that the 3000-series is really still just a R600-series core, it makes sense. But what are they going to call these models? HD 4000?

Bummer, I was hoping to hear Dual-Core GPU news instead of another Dual GPU board...maybe things will change though.

Another dual-GPU design :shadedshu

Will there ever be a single, powerful GPU from ATi?

doesn't the title in that X-bit article say "rumors" and not "sources"?

Hopefully, now fix the mutli-core chips! I want to see some real competition again!

Who knows? Mabye R700 will blow everything away the way that G80 did? I don't mind dual gpu cards... as long as they're not made by Nvidia.:)

There was nothing "wrong" with the 7950GX2 was there?

Lol, don't get me started! DRIVERS! But this is for another thread. ATi is looking good!

Aww ok, I didn't know, I have not personally had an Nvidia card since erm an Mx440....

Hmm. This puts a sour taste in my mouth as I plan on building my system beginning of March  But oh well, I can always upgrade. Good for AMD.

Are they dual gpu or dual core gpu?

I would expect the gpu's to go the way of cpu's and go multicore.

this news kinda makes me wonder if its worth it for me to get a 3870x2, i wasnt expecting another gen of cards from then until late 08 so I might just hang on to my 3870 until these new ones come out..... hmmm

I have just now (after 2 months) got my Crossfire setup working "most of the time". I doubt a 3870x2 will give me much benefit over what I have now. I am waiting to see what R700 brings and if it does not perform I will definitely be looking at Nvid to see how their cards fair.

I hope they start developing and releasing dual core GPUs... seems like it would be much more efficient both in terms of space and energy (maybe).

Bout damn friggin' time we get some R700 info from a reliable source!!

:rockout: :rockout: :rockout:

:D R700 ISN'T JUST SOME HYPED-UP RUMOR!!! :D

I think I'm gonna cry!

w00t HD4870 ftw lol

I'm still going to sit on the fence until a decent DX10 card comes out from ATi or nVidia. Currently "DX10" cards are just souped up DX9 cards, just because they tout DX10 on the box doesnt mean their actually any good.

agreed, all DX10 cards have been a disapointment, I dont know if its the cards or the coding for DX10, it really hasnt impressed me that much

I've been told by certain sources their not impressed with DX10 at all. DX10 does nothing DX9C cant do, and in fact some of these sources say DX9C is actualy more powerful and versatile, the only drawback is its trickier to program for (but lets be serious here, its rare something comes out thats both more powerful and easier to work with) and I saved the best till last, in some testing where a DX9C path was used to do exactly the same thing as a DX10 codepath (including the "DX10 only" stuff) the DX9C route come out faster, by quite a noticable margin.

I believe it,
When I look at dx10 I wonder, they have 10.1 comin out with vista sp1 and it just seems like they realize its not that special and need to make big changes already

MS have outright said they dont expect 10.1 to be widely used, and a few months before that MS as good as said Vista is crap. Hell, they even said their next OS could ship beginning 2009... interprit that as you will.
