ASUS Z7S Not a Hoax

When we reported about the Inquirers review of the Asus Z7S we were quite skeptical. ASUS contacts could not confirm existence and even doubted the news themselves due to various reasons. (naming scheme, FB-DIMM's on enthusiast board, etc)
Besides a small review the Z7S was not heard of. Though we are happy to be able to tell you it isn't a hoax, a contact at Asus confirmed existence of the board and it is indeed aimed at previous PC-DL/NCCH-DL users.
Unfortunately nothing new is known, but seeing how the aforementioned boards were priced odds are it will not cost you an arm and a leg. Which is, of course, relative.
Strategically it would make sense to release this around the release of Skulltrail, the only board with similar features. So let's hope for some more news next month.

That is nice, hopefully they will make more than a pwney 2000. Any news on Asus's external video card?

Good follow-up :pimp:

Any news on Asus's external video card?

i briefly discussed it with asus at ces. they are closer to launch but right now the problem is that they need to support higher end cards and bring down the price

Obviously, there is newer, and faster gcards coming every couple of weeks.

I hope we don't see those 'limited-quantity' crap from ASUS. Are you planning for one, Dan?

I wonder if this board will work with SLi like the SKull will do.

It's Crucial, FB-DIMM, 667 MHz, EEC, yes it would work.

Yes, but you'd want 800MHz modules.

I'll have to look around Newegg doesn't carry that speed.

They do have ECC DDR2 at that speed, but it's not the same thing right?

What's the main differences? I know how ECC is different but not FB-DIMM.

Edit:http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/266
The main difference between FB-DIMM modules and regular DIMM modules is that on FB-DIMM the communication between the memory controller (chipset) and the module is serial, in the same way that occurs with PCI Express, while on standard DIMM modules this communication is parallel.

Whatever, don't buy directly from Crucial on their website, they have atrocious pricing.

So let me get this right. With FB-DIMM the more sticks you have the more bandwidth you have, and the faster it will be? So it would be better to fill it up with 8x256MB, 4x512MB sticks vs 2x1GB sticks?

Not completely. Though having at least 2 ranks per channel does give better performance. Simultaneous reads/writes are possible for example.

So 4 sticks of ram would be the way to go.

688, if that would only work with the current euro>dollar translation it would be acceptable. Though it most likely doesn't. Lets hope gamepc.com is just very expensive.
