A lawsuit filed today by the University of Wisconsin claims that the processor infringes on patented technology developed by one of its professors, back in 1998. Gurindar Sohi, Computer Science department chair, presented some of his developments relating to instruction level parallelism to Intel and offered to license them, but got nowhere, yet the same tech is in the Core 2 Duo, according to the lawsuit. Intel says its been talking to the Badgers for over a year now, and that it has not evaluated the complaint, which it might want to do in short order, since the University of Wisconsin is asking for the court to halt shipments of the Core 2 Duo in addition to monetary damages and legal fees.

Thats pretty wild. Imagine if core 2s were no longer being produced, that would certainly give amd a much needed boost, lol.

Indeed. I bet AMD is praying lol.

All Intel needs to do is donate like $20 millions to the computer department and problem solved. Hell they will rename that department Intel Department of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin, too. Good publicity.

serves them right for stealing from the state that has the most bars. When we have a good idea we want people to know it.

lol, this could really turn the tables, but i don't think its going to happen, there are plenty of core2duo's shipped already and its Intel... nothing is going to happen to them

Well, this probably what is going to happen... and everyone will be happy. Except AMD.:nutkick:

Meh, I think Intel has enough chump change to dish out to keep the professor happy.

They will just pay them 2bill and say "forget about the whole thing kk?"

Yea, although it probably won't hurt them, it seems like it would have been more advantageous for them to just buy the license from him and avoid this.

I very vaguely remember something like this between Transmeta and Intel.

:laugh:The irony of it all is, the University of Wisconsin is probably using C2D machines at this very moment.

haha tru dat.
This is definitely wild, but I don't forsee a judge in his right mind stopping technological progress like that. If it doesn't settle out of court (which is most likely will), then the judge will most likely only impose a monetary settlement to the professor & university.
If it is a legit complaint, then in all fairness, shame on intel for shafting the man responsible for one of the best procs EVER. If anything, they should fund his continuing research and development! Oh, and sign a no-compete so he can't sell to AMD. It's to their advantage to continue their lead.

Intel, all I ask for as a student of the University of Wisconsin is you send me a bunch of 45nm dual and quad core processors. Apology accepted.:D

i can imagine so, cause they only happen once a decade up there :P

word I'll support u on that.

lol now here where it could get really funny, if AMD makes an offer to buy his patents before the case settles :D

maaaaaan lets hope AMD isn't reading this forum right now; Intel will be in a pile of POOPOO; that is, if AMD is cutthroat enough to go thru with that. Pandora's Box...

i would so shit myself if they bought Core2 Duo from under Intel, that would be the funniest thing since White and Nerdy

Isn't this just about Core 2 Duo but the Intel Core micro-architecture in general? Even if they succeed in stopping Core 2 Duo, there still are Core 2 Quad, Core 2 Extreme, Pentium Dual-Core, Celeron D, Xeon.....almost every processor Intel makes now is based around the Core micro-arch.

This would include anything that uses this parallelism, which I believe would be any of those above you listed. EDIT: except pentium dual core, celeron d... only the core 2 from what I understand.

CeleronD is Netburst, CeleronL and Celeron e1x00 is Core2. Also the Core Duo and Core Solo are Pentium3's built on a 90nm process with SSE3, its actully older tech than P4 but whoops its royal ass.

Oh sorry, yeah CeleronL. And well the Core Solo too.
