IBM was never known for making anything small. From some of the very first computers to the PlayStation 3 processor, IBM is one of the largest influences of the tech industry. As if to add to this success, IBM wants to be a host: to the entire internet. The thought is, at first, silly, and then unfathomable. How can one computer, let alone one company, run the entire internet? IBM claims they can pull it off with a heavily modified Blue Gene computer, which they have codenamed "Kittyhawk". The processing power of Kittyhawk would be immense. The software is too complex to explain, and will be left at "Kittyhawk will run the internet as a single application". As far as hardware is concerned, current estimates say that Kittyhawk will need 67.1 million cores and 32PB of memory.

i think its bluegene and not genie lol.

67.1 million cores.... HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!

how big is that thing gonna be? and how much money?

also i hope this doesn't have negative impacts.. all of our data and porn going to ibm....

I bet google will be interested.

Wow thats alot of power.. I wonder if you popped a 8800GTS in there if it will max crysis at 1920x1200 lol

no its one core short of maxing out crysis

LOL The number of cores sounds more easy to make than it would to get 32 PB of memory, in that thing. Personally I think that it will be an accomplishment if they can even make this computer to fit in one room like they did with the worlds first ever computer, lol.

And then one day the power goes out, and the entire Internet is down.

32 Petabytes of RAM?

Holly mother....Jesus....

Sorry but what is the point of this? Is it not good enough that the whole internet is spread over multiple servers with multiple redundancies? What happens if this would go down? The internet goes bye-bye? What about bandwidth concerns...that's alot of bandwidth needed. Also, if the whole internet was concentrated in one computer, what happens if someone attacks it? It's kinda pointless imo. The internet's good because it's redundant and spread over a bunch of servers.

I seriously doubt they want to control the internet. I can assure you if that was their intention, Microsoft would be the first to say "lolumad?"

well you'd only need 500 bluegene /L's.. each of which has 131k cpu's in it.

-4 bluegene /L's

I will take over this computer and use it to run unfathomable instances of F@H :nutkick:

wow, that thing would be a beast

I doubt that that would all fit in a Normal Sized room let alone a Gymnasium. Also the Maintenance to keep up with this beast would be insane.:laugh::laugh:

so... can this thing run crysis?

looks kinda big...

It's a bit of Sci-Fi!
:D
So many cores, and when it is ready what then?
The terrorist need just one peace of earth to vaporize or what? :D
So Grand Plan...
I have a "Grand Plan To" I just wanna ""play"" with my girlfriend 24/7 Yeap
that's My Grand Plan
Anyone has any other "Grand Plans" like IBM and I?
:D:D:D

curious . . .

just how many acres of land will they need to aquire for a center to house this monstrosity?

Wow, though, you could imagine the heat output? They'll be able to save on structural heating costs, for sure!

not quite design each CPU to fit a server stack.

you only need 67gb's per core, modern server carry that much anyway, so why not?

I want a SuperPI 1M number though :D

yea but i wouldnt want there electricy bill at all, not to mention there AC bill

SuperPi is single threaded not multie..
i call it waste of money

Forget processing power and memory, what would be its required network bandwidth?

~8EBps? (eight exabytes per second)?
