Dell buys Alienware

Well this is a rather shocking but by no means surprising move by Dell. Shocking because I personally never thought it possible, please excuse my ignorance. Seems like the deal went thru real quietly, but we can finally say that Dell is selling AMD based PCs. The two firms will continue as seperate entities. So in the future not much will change for us as customers it seems. Although the news seems reliable, it should be noted that it is still unconfirmed by either firm.

Its so much cheaper to build your own system too. My friend payed over $3000 dollars for his Alienware. I paid $900 for mine at the same time, and got PCI-e, DDR2, and Socket T. His machine was still a little more powerful at that time though. Its been a year now, and I think my PC is up to around $1200, and is finnally more powerfull than his for ~$2000 less. . He learned his lesson.

alien ware and dell are both a complete rip off and over rated. no one should buy them even if they had the money. and as thermopylae stated its so much better and cheaper to buy your own.

Well yes, I tend to agree, but Dell does have cheap LCDs (especially larger size) and PDAs...those two things I would buy (and already have -> 2405FPW).

I could care less if Dell bought out Alienware, though it is a bit of surprise. I never and will never buy an Alienware, almost all their parts are easily available for end users to buy, same with other PC buliding companies. Dell makes great value PC's for the average user, and they make very nice LCDs. They're the kind of PC you buy when you just want a system to check emails/surf the net and could care less about what's in it for hardware.

lol either Nvidia has ghosting problems, or the LCD's that dell sells have AWFUL response times...I went over to my friends house to play on his dell XPS ($3,000 or so of bells and whistles, 1GB DDR2, Dual core P4, 6800, dual hdd) and the ghosting was just...everywhere . Could be just an isolated experience though. I've heard good things about them USUALLY (especially when their models rip off of samsung ). In my opinion, if I wanted a huge LCD, I'd go to best buy and get myself a big screen TV

maybe the big screen is a good idea but id stick with my monitor my huge monitor...and i think pretty colors urn big screens which is why you shouldnt game on them. but maybe it isnt like that any more i wouldnt know i dont keep up with tv's i have this massive zenith from like the 80's in my room it has this massive screen and s-video etc input jacks so i dont need a new one.

Maybe their high end ones are better but the one that came with my friend's computer is nasty. Fuzzy with washed out color, and some weird halo effect even when nothing is moving.

Oh Thermopylae, the PC itself did not cost over $3000. Its all the extra crap I bought afterwards, like those ridiculous speakers that kept driving the price up. But yes, I guess I did learn my lesson, I'm never going to buy another pre-made PC, I'm building my own from now on, though the Alienware is the best and most stable PC I've ever owned
