Metal Gear Solid fans may be pleased to hear that they can now download the beta version of Konami's Metal Gear Online via the PlayStation Store on the PS3. The download is free and weighs in at 741MB, although you'll have to wait until 21st April to play it, with the beta running until 6th May. The final version of Metal Gear Online will be bundled with Metal Gear Solid 4, which is scheduled for release on 12th June this year.
The beta phase features two maps, four gameplay modes, the SOP System that encourages up to 16 players to team up and share information, and deep skill-customization. Also equipped with auto-matching and training modes, the game offers players a sneak peak of this totally new approach to console-based competitive gaming.

Well, as there was no other mention of it on the TPU news page and the beta hasn't actually started yet, I wouldn't consider it particularly late. ;)

I have dled it with my backdoor JPN key, hopefully its not region locked, so that I can use my US konami ID. If so, no worries, I will stop by best buy and pick up a pre-order (then return it ;))

Jimmy: If we see some interesting gaming News, should we PM you about it?

Yes, me and Malware are probably the best ones to PM - or you can send it to news@techpowerup.com

Not everything will be posted (eg. only the more interesting gaming stories get posted) but if you send it to us we'll definitely take a look :)

em no...cos i wont get sound...or can i?

There may be an adapter for the PS3 like there is for the Xbox360. I have my Xbox connected to my monitor and have a cable kit that I bought that plugs into my soundcard.

This is what I have: http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=40681

The red and white cables are for audio. There is an adapter that you can plug them into (included)that turns it into a 3.5mm jack which plugs right into the line-in spot of your soundcard. Youll need something like that for your PS3.

Very good news especially as Metal Gear online was meant to be released as a separate game altogether so it is good they have ad a change of heart and bundled it in.

Here's what I did:

I bought a HDMI to DVI cable. (Plugged HDMI to my PS3 and DVI to back of monitor)

I bought female RGB plug to male mini RGB. (I used the normal sound white and red and plugged that in to the plug that I bought *YOUR PS3 WILL DETECT THAT THERE IS NO HDMI SOUND*)

I bought a female mini RGB 2 side plug. (I plugged the male mini rbg from into the female and then my speakers into that female as well.)

By doing the above I got computer quality sound that worked great. Now I'm on a 1080p 40" setup so I don't use that setup anymore.

Sweet, good to know. I do read gaming news multiple times a day, and find some great stuff. One of the hot news is that GTA4 is gold, and R* Social Club is open for pre-registration.

Sweet, some one was nice to give me a legit US key...now I dont have to rely on the back door. If you want a key, go to the official PS forums, and people are giving them away.

Btw, http://id.konami.net is back up!
