New Buffalo Blu-ray Writers Burn at 8x

Buffalo Technologies claimed to have made the fastest PC Blu-ray disc writers. The Buffalo BR-816FBS is a standard sized internal optical drive while the BR-816FBS-WH is an external drive. The drives are HDCP compliant and play Blu-ray titles. Apart from this, the storage capacity of the media means that the amount of data that can be backed up in one go is substantially increased. This drives burn Blu-ray discs at 8x (38 MB/s) speeds which means that a full capacity single-layer volume could be written in 12 minutes compared to the 45 minutes it takes for 2x speed writers to do the same task.

The drive can write DVDs at 16x and CDs at 48x. Buffalo includes CyberLink disc authoring software with the drive. This, according to Buffalo, offers a "smart non-linear stretching feature" intended to enhance colours, lighting and effects to ensure regular DVDs can be experienced at optimal quality. The drives are available at all major retailers and online stores and priced at US $370 for the internal drive and $420 for the external version.

By this time next year I'm sure they will have something faster. And this is pretty cool. I'm looking at getting a blu-ray player/burner here sometime soon and this will probably be one i consider

The theoretical maximum for Blu-ray Discs is about 12x, as the speed of rotation (10,000 rpm) causes too much wobble for the discs to be read properly. This is similar to the 20x and 52x respective maximum speeds of DVDs and CDs.

Yea i agree with erocker. Disks are getting quite annoying and since flash drives are high capacity already they shoudl just improve on those. Utilize the USB3.0 bus for great things.

Yea i agree with erocker. Disks are getting quite annoying and since flash drives are high capacity already they shoudl just improve on those. Utilize the USB3.0 bus for great things.

Sounds expensive (due to the IEEE1394 licenses) and not many motherboards have firewire ports.

BluRay will definitely be the next defined way of gaming, especially if Microsoft goes BluRay with their Xbox 360s soon. Once the console age is focussed on BluRay, all the devs will be looking forward to the large number of BluRay PC users. Also the fact that this will make games a lot easier to make, now that Gabe Newell won't need to pass the next Orange Box project over to EA so that the PS3 owners won't be pissed.

Once the console age is focussed on BluRay, all the devs will be looking forward to the large number of BluRay PC users. Also the fact that this will make games a lot easier to make, now that Gabe Newell won't need to pass the next Orange Box project over to EA so that the PS3 owners won't be pissed.

Windows supports Blu-Ray as of now. So, PC gaming will go DVD/Blu-Ray sometime in the near future (instead of CD/DVD).

Companies like LG are trying so hard to get their BluRay drives in consumer hands. Kinda hate to say it, but I think I'm gonna wait until these drives write at a good 12x as well as diving under the $100 range and then I'll get my credit card out.

Blue ray media format only has 5 years left in it anyway, 1080p is the same, no point ivesting huge amounts of $$ into a dead format, OLED is the future, and thise kinds of resoloutions will never fit on a Blueray Format.

Allso if Sony didnt use its bully tactics we would be paying less than half the price for HD dvd players and media because it was a far cheaper format yet did the same thing as Blueray.

why? its copying data faster than a 22x DVD-RW or 56X CD-RW which is the highest you can really find in those. so what would the point be it can flawlessly read a blu-ray movie in and burn 50GB of data in the same amount of time as a DVD-RW takes to burn 8.5GB

Either way, I'm waiting for BluRay drives to go under the $100 price point. You never know what features you will find in the upcoming BluRay drives in the future. However, I am still a bit excited about using BluRay drives as a backup

Does anyone know how to take a screenshot of a BD on a PC? PowerDVD doesnt have the functionality for BD's and printscreen function doesnt work either for BD's.
