1.2 GB Video ram

This isn't so much of a problem but when I upgraded to a 8800 GT 512 it says on the system requirements lab test that my video ram is 1.2 gb :confused:

Is that being shared from my main RAM. Cheers for any help.

It is literally shared system RAM. It's not system RAM dedicated to the video card.

Yes I suppose it is shared with main ram. My Radeon 1950GT has 2303MB graphics ram in Vista
(512+1791)

I had noticed that when I see dxdiag reports of people on Vista (don't have Vista myself).

But does that mean that Vista OS makes better use of the video card by 'giving' it more ram, albeit shared, when it's vram gets full during high spec game-play?

It makes sense since in WiC on XP it says video ram overload but in vista it doesn't since it gives more RAM

I mean even in XP when the vram is full then the system RAM is used, no? But maybe vista does this in a more efficient way :confused:

One really doesn't want the GFX to use system RAM. Ever.
If that happens your frame rates will plummet to a value near 0.

but isnt system ram used to load big maps & possibly some 'sprites' in while the graphics mem handles the 'textures'??? i would say its still early days for anything to max out GPU ram (mid - high range cards only) unless its games such as Crysis but even i dont know about that buecause ive never played Crysis before.

its a shame that there is no tool or utilty that tells you how much Grfx ram is being used. like when u open up your preocess manager.

I don't know if it actualy uses mine but it said the max capacity for vram was 1.2 gb I doubt many games will use 512.

all on board graphics are using the system ram.
many low end graphis (like the 72000) are using the system ram too.

guess it's more related to the card used, or something in the driver, and not an OS specific.

That's true.

I only ever monitored vram usage in Oblivion. Mostly it is around 300-500MB vram. However I had installed QTP3 which makes all the textures really more detailed (4096x4096 if I remember correctly?) and in the countryside that used to get my vram usage over 600MB and at times even over 800MB. Now my 8800GT has only got 512MB vram so where would the game be getting the 200+ vram it needed? Obviously from the system ram no?

My fps never got near 0 however. I'd be running at 60 fps in the countryside (which is good for Oblivion) then I'd notice fps drops to ~40 or 45 when vram usage goes up higher than 500MB.
