Own a Intel 10900K but my Z490 Mobo now way past its warranty just died! (electrical spiking) Financialy I can only now afford a new mobo replacement and want to purchase a Z590 board to at least be halfway up to date. This said my 10900K is reported as being backwards compatible, but will it in fact be "pairing" effectively with a 11th Gen mobo? What have been the backwards CPU compatible experiences to date? What are the downfalls if any. Will there be any BIOS updating issues? Or CPU performance and speed issues which a 11th Gen board may force upon me? I really do not want to purchase another Z490 board replacement at this stage and be two-generations behind the 8-ball in no time. Thoughts?

The only issue you will have is the M.2 slot that runs off the CPU won't work with a 10th Gen CPU. Other than that, you shouldn't have issues, the boards are designed to work with 10th gen. I've got a 10700K in a Z590 motherboard and it just worked out of the box with the 10th gen CPU.

My only issue was not reading the manual and fiddling for about a half hour trying to figure out why the M.2 SSD in the M.2_1 slot wasn't being detected. Once I read the manual I realized that M.2 slot runs from the CPU and only works with 11th gen processors that have the extra PCI-E lanes.

How can you be 'way past warranty' when the chipset was only released a year ago this month? And as @newtekie1 stated, all z590 boards are ready to go out of the box with a 10900k.

Maybe they got it Open Box with only a 30-90 day warranty.

Many thanks for your kind reply. Great info! And a thumps up! Will thus spring for a Z590 Asus Hero XIII (Amazon buy this time and not from the local computer show) and with no issues out of the box. Who knows what this November will bring and with Alder Lake being in full swing? Possibly much reduced Z590 CPU pricing? But all things considered I can most likely fly along with my 10900K for a few more years and sandwiched now in a brand new Mobo. The 10-cores should surely keep me in check and into the games.

If you don't use Thunderbolt here's a board worth having a look at for less than half the price as the Asus board.

Honestly, I feel like the 11900K is almost a slight downgrade from the 10900K. If you just look at stock vs stock(and lets be honest the overclocking potential with either is pretty slim) the 10900K beats the 11900K in a lot of multithreaded loads thanks to the extra 2 cores and beats it in games too. The M.2 slot directly off the CPU is nice on the 11900K, but I don't know if it is worth sacrificing 2C/4T, and I don't think it even really makes a noticeable difference in performance, the same goes with PCI-E 4.

Actually have to agree with you on this one. Literally NO reason to spend $500 on a board with zero upgrade path, as you (OP) already own the "top dog" as it were (11th gen is a jokefest at this point) and there's plenty of cheaper, but just as capable, boards out there.

I agree, except for the recommendation of a Gigabyte board. Go with any other well known brand, but avoid Gigabyte.

I recommend an ASRock midrange offering, like Z590 Steel Legend / 6E WiFi. Got mine for $190 after rebate, for my i9-10900KF. Unless you really need a high-end board for some specific reasons, no point spending more than ~$200.
