14700K + 4070TI New Build. Will become an unRAID server in the future

I am looking to build a new computer for the first time since 2017. I plan to move these components to become my unRAID server once I need something new (4 years away or so). This is why I've selected the motherboard (10Gb and Thunderbolt built-in). I also have 15 drives currently in my server, and that is another reason for the higher-watt PSU.

What do you all think about this build? I hope to save money where I can, but I am willing to spend more if the price/performance is worth it in the long run - considering I will be making this my unRAID server in the future and using the parts for 6+ years.

Never heard of a 4070k.

Do you require a GPU for the unraid? Integrated is more than enough for display. Honestly unless you're doing heavy CPU stuff a 14700k is hugely overkill too.

Haha. Oops. Meant to say 4070TI.

When I move the components over to become the unRAID server, I will probably sell off the GPU.
 
I don't want to sound like a fanboy even though I'm a pro-AMD dude these days, I'll just ask that why Intel?

Quick Sync. I wish AMD and their "Quick Sync" worked better with Plex and Transcoding. I've also had some weirdish errors in unRAID with my old Ryzen 1700 CPU.

To be honest, I don't even know what that is :D but if you need that, it's fine. I just try to be neutral even though I hate Intel and Nvidia lol :laugh:

I know someone that uses AVC for encoding their Emby streams with no issues. However I give the encoding support to NVIDIA and Intel. (Though the latter is limited)

Maybe a little NVIDIA GPU like a 3050 would work for encoding, or use it in with the iGPU. You'd be out of a reason of getting a more expensive card.

What if the guy wants to crack keys, play vidya, fold some homes etc in the meantime? 4070TS is a great GPU for whatever activity.
As an active AMD user I can assure you QSV still beats it.
Unfortunately, can't help with the unRAID matter because I don't even know what this is. Price to performance wise, this build looks really darn solid.

If OP mentioned doing those things then yes it would make sense. However getting a 4070ti for storage and encoding doesn't make a whole lot of sense when QuickSync off the iGPU would do the job.

I was going to ask the same thing, because when I hear the "RAID" in UnRAID I immediately think of data worth protecting and that would entail ECC memory. While the new Intel processors (since Alder Lake) no longer need to be of the Xeon variety (actually, the corresponding models no longer exist) using ECC memory with them requires a W680-based motherboard, which is both very expensive and difficult to source. AMD, on the other hand, has the ECC feature in all of their processors (with the sad exception being most of the APU versions) and AMD motherboards supporting ECC are much easier to find and also much much cheaper.

But perhaps the data in question (which would go on the server) is just unimportant stuff that is to be stored at a centralized location. In that case, all of the above doesn't matter.

Thank you for your insights. The data is mostly movie & tv show rips. I have another small box that I do regular backups to as well.

I won't use the 4070ti in the unRAID machine. I will probably sell it off or use it again in another build when that time comes

You didn't have a cooler and the 14700K doesn't come with one. Replaced 2TB with a 4TB and a cheaper PSU that's ~2% more efficient.

Trident RAM doesn't have a thermal pad on the PMIC so TG Expert is better. White too.

SSD was reviewed and got editors choice on TPU.

Bear in mind Arrow Lake is around the corner with some very significant technical advancements.
