Hi got myself a 3870 last week and i also got a VF900 cooler. What temps should i be looking at with that cooler as i have done a pencil mod on my card and i clocked it at 908/1300.
Now with my stock cooler at loads my temps went to 75c.I installed the Zalman and they actually went to 85c:eek: which doesnt seem right to me.Then fan was running at full speed, the idle temp was 30c do you think there is something wrong with the cooler?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

reseat or turn up the fan.

Hi am using as5 the airflow in case is fine.

I'd reseat the fan

at the very least, remove the fan and make sure that the TIM that you applied is unifrom across the mating surface. If one area is thicker, or there's a spot with nothing at all, the base of the cooler might not be flat enough, or it might not be installed correctly.

Can you detail the airflow and report temps idle/load for your other components? I would say reseat your HSF, but I don't know if a VF900 can handle a vmodded and very OC'd 3870, as the heat wattage output increases greatly with voltage increases. I would recommend getting an AC S1 rev2 cooler and either putting the fan module on it or a 120mm fan. I have one on my 1950xtx OC'd with decent temps, where a VF900 can't handle my card stock due to wattage output.

Just a thought though. I haven't looked into the 3870 series cooling solutions since I don't have one yet.
:toast:

without saying how many volts u have modded it to how hot it should be is just guessing..

ati seem to think 90 C is okay.. thats what they set them at.. or with the reference ones they did..

trog

I bet this is exactly the issue, and I would recommend the same solution. AC S1 will do the job. It wouldn't hurt to try some MX-2 instead of AS5. It cools slightly better, and is non-conductive.

My 3850 has a vf900 on it,even volted to1.34v and running at 840mhz,mine does'nt go no were near that temp.It maxxed out at 54c benching at 840mhz.

Make sure you have good contact between the vf and the gpu.

Yeah, i can confirm what tigger says, my 3850 is also clocked around where his is and dosen't even hit 60C with a VF-900

I would say that you have too much voltage on the card, you should take the pencil mod off and see what happens

Just like everyone else said, take off the heatsink, clean off old compound, reapply fresh compound and reseat it. If that doesn't work, then I don't know what will.
That's real odd that the Zalman gives you a higher temp vs. your stock HSF...

Hi thanks for all of your sugestions i think i am going to redo the pencil mod as at the mo i have 1.45v which is probably way to much.i will report back later.

Whats the surface like on the zalman it may need a little lapping?
